  1. I was attempting to get at the fuel tank in my 2000 GS300. Per other threads I read, the bottom bench came out as described. As you can imagine, they dont come out easily in older vehicles. Got it out, removed the lower 4 bolts on the vertical back of bench, but now I am stuck. It is loose except up top. I was assuming, it was attached by two hangers, but I cannot seem to be able to push it up to remove it. Is it attached differently or am I doing something wrong? I dont want to break it but I have exerted quite a but of upward pressure while wiggling it back an forth to break it loose. No luck so far. A little help here.

  2. If you have a pioneer radio in it, your right, they are junk for the cost Lexus charges. Same thing happened to my 2000 gs300 in 2002 just out of warranty. Someone from this site gave me the same instructions to buy the lcd board from Pioneer (99 bucks at the time). It was but it was a very easy job to remove the radio and replace the board. Apparently the problem was at the electrical ribbon connection . Mine has worked perfectly ever since. If you decide to replace it yourself, I can dig up the instructions for removal. The middle console trim is a bit tricky unless you know how it comes out. Takes less than a half hour to pull out.

  3. Dont worry. lost my shield about six months ago and no problems. Just dont park it in a pile of leaves and you should be ok.

Strange thing. unfortunately, Lexus makes this shield out of carbon steel and uses a carbon steel hose clamp on the front end of the converter to hold it. Once the clamp rusts through, it falls off. After I noticed a rattling and found the clamp broken, the rest fell off on my way to buy a new hose clamp. I'll be damned if I am going to replace a perfectly good converter due to a missing converter shield.

  4. Sorry. This forum can be a bit slow. When you get a response, it's usually helpful, though.

I'm new to Lexus, so can't really answer your question. Personally, I'd keep the car though. I did lot's of research on these cars before buying mine a couple months ago, and plan on keeping it way past 100k miles. They seem pretty solid and trouble free.

I have an 00 with 110K on it. The only real thing you will spend money on is the timing belt at suggested 90K. I went to 100 and the belt looked like it could go for at least another 25k. That will cost you around 800-900 bucks since they replace the water pump as well as the timing belt. (Have to take the pump off to get to the belt.) If you do it yourself, the pump is around 230 and the belt is 30.

  5. FYI : Any local general aviation airport sells 100LL 100 octane low lead. Costs 4-5 bucks per gal. It will stain your injectors blue from the dye in it.

FYI: Octane does absolutely nothing to clean injectors. This is just more gasoline hooey. If you want to learn about petroleum, go to the American Petroleum Institute's website. There you will find an area that dispells most of the myths of gasoline, octane and additives.

FYI: I have been running 89 octane in my 00 GS300 for years. Amazingly, I still get around 20 in town and 25-26 hwy. For the six cylinder, I can't detect any difference in performance either. I used to be fooled by the idea that higher octane was better for the car, but wised up after studying the subject. Check the API site and see the light.

Hope this helps some of you save money.

  6. Funny that, I thought I was the only crazy person that those damn stickers annoyed.

I went to a local vinyl sign store and got a few scraps of the closest gray color I could find to match the interior. Traced the sticker on some paper and cut a sticker to fit. Not a perfect solution, but at least I am not bothered by a cheap yellow sticker that "states the obvious" for our litigious society. Another reason to hate lawyers.

  7. I agree, H are fine. Just put the second set of H rated tires on my 00 GS 300. My local tire dealer said similar comments. If you dont plan on driving over 100mph, why buy the more expensive tires. Also, they will wear out faster from what I have read on the subject. Some people will tell you they get better road contact with V rated but I have not noticed the difference from the V rated tires that came with the car. I drive in midwest, snow, ice, rain, hot cold. The H work just fine for normal driving (not AJ Foyt type).

One other note. Never had to align the tires either, God I love lexus vehicles!

  8. My 1998 GS400 with standard OE radio now has a fading LED display. The display is 95% faded out so I can't see the stations. Is there a fix for this problem?

My radio display crapped out on my 2000 GS300 in 2002, just out of warranty. Back then a member gave me a serial number on the board and a telephone number to buy a replacement board. Also sent along instructions with pictures as to how to remove the radio unit.

Simple to do and even easier to replace display board. Apparently the plug ribbon is a problem where they glue it to the board. If the other responder cant help you with the 125.00 board. let me know. and I will dig out the info on the guy who helped me out of Fla.

  9. I reviewed the existing posts for info on timing belts but didnt see this particular information.

I have a 2002 GS300 with 95K miles. I just bought it. I dont wanna pay the $1500.00 for the 100K mile service

at the local dealership. That includes the timing belt, which is 625.00 by itself. I am debating on whether or not to have the timing

    belt changed.

    My question is:

How many miles do you have on your 2002 GS300 and did you change your timing belt? If you changed it did they say what kind of wear it had on it?

    Thanks all.

    David

I know you dont want to hear this, but just change it and then you dont have to worry about a breakdown somewhere. It is really the only big expense you have with these cars. If you do it yourself, it only costs your time and about 35 bucks for the belt. I fought trying to get the bolt off the timing belt and finally spent the 750.00 to have the dealer do it. Most of the lexus' recommend 90 K for change and you probably can get more, but why worry about a breakdown.

  10. In case I dont hear anything on my other post...

For my 03 GS300 with 88k (pure highway miles)

I just bought a case of mobil 1 synthetic 10w-30 at costco (29 bucks seemed cheap for 6 1quart bottles)

Went to tom wood and got the OEM oil filter airfilter and gasket (about $30 total) air filter was $20!!!

Ive changed oil on my van (mercury villager) and old car (nissan 240sx) so wanted to see if there was anything to be cautious of? Does the air filter need changed every 5k? Seemed to be expensive is the reason I ask.

Whats the $2 gasket he sold me (just asked if I needed one...I said I guess!)

How many quarts should it take?

    Thanks!

    Ross

All of that infor should be in your maintenance book with your owners manual. If that is the straight six 3.0 L it should take around 5 to 5.5 quarts. Check your manual as to oil viscosity. I dont think it specs 10w-30. Also, the air filter is 15k between changes but it specs it in the manual.

  11. i just had new yokohama avid v4s mounted on my gs. and its repeated leaked air down to 10 psi within a few days..

i brought it back to the tire shop, few times already, and they dismounted cleaned the lips, and sealed it with some gunk, and again it leaked in a few days..

    no damage on the wheels.

the funny thing is that 6 months ago my friend with a older 1997 lexus es was having the same problem with her new yoko tires... it kept on leaking, and they repeatedly dismounted/remounted, and no resulution still.. very annoying!! also no lip damage on the rims..

the tire shop says its the rims... but why would it not leak with the old Dunlop tires for the past 3 yrs, and the next day leaks with the new tires???? if its the rim problem, wouldn't it leak even with the old tires???

or is it a problem with yokohamas on Lexuses???

anyone with experienced the same thing? any input would be helpful..

Dont know if I can help but I have a 2000 GS300 with chromed, aluminum alloy rims. Two continually lost air pressure after a few years. My tire dealer has resealed them and buffed the rims but they continue to leak. Tire dealer claims the chrome flakes around seal area and then leaks. Said he has seen the same problem with other chromed rims like this. After 6 years the chrome is peeling around the air valves. Answer. Don't ever buy these type of rims again. Sorry cant be of more help.

  12. the oe pads are ceramic. stick with those

They are not ceramic...they are semi mettalic

Just changed my 2000 GS300 pads myself and I believe they were Ceramic. They were a japanese make, not oem, but was one of the easiest brake jobs I have done. Less than $100 and a hour or so labor. Changed at 75K and the rear brakes were less than 50% worn. New aftermarket pads feel great.

PS Metallic, not mettalic. Spell check is a brilliiant tool.

  13. RE: 2000 Lexus GS300 driver side rear view mirror, heated

Anyone know what my options are here. I had a piece of tire thrown up that hit the mirror housing busting out the mirror and some of the guts. Unplugged it but unsure if I can simply buy replacement parts or if I have to buy the entire rear view mirror as a whole unit.

Either way, wheres the best place to get this stuff on the cheap?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

  14. Lost a key for my 2000 GS 300 (fortunately have one other). Called dealer and was told cost to replace and reprogram transponder would be $ 240 bucks ! Wow!

Does anyone have a reasonabel alternative to this ripoff? Found a site where I can get a new blank w/transponder (programmable) for

$ 65 and a keysmith that can laser cut it for another $40. Can anyone do better? Thanks in advance.
