  1. i could use the advice of all you guys who know the 94 sc400. i bought the car with 190k on it about a month ago,my wife and i needed a 2nd car and we fell in love with this one. im having some problems that are making me think i should get out now. here is a list. 1.car idles fine but when you raise the rpms you feel vibration 2.there is a whirring noise at 40 to 70 mph coming from the rear 3.slight valve clatter when ever you hit the gas a little hard 4.banging noise from left rear when going over bumps all of the above problems where not there when i got the car. the vibration was not there, its come on more in the past two weeks. the valve clatter was only when you floored it,now its even at half throttle. do you think its time to bail out of this car,i dont have much cash to spend on it. thanks.
  2. i found out the noise i hear when i get on the gas hard is from the valves. the motor is fine at idle, you hear the valves when you get on it. i hear it more now that the weather is colder, and untill the car warms up. when the car gets warm it is less loud. it sure seems like i need a valve adjustment, seems like the clearance is loose and when the metal heats up it takes up some of the slack. lexus says they never have had to adjust the valves and i should leave alone. i dont have $900 right now anyway. is this common with this motor? can i use some b&g stuff to the oil? will i do any damage just leaving it alone? what do you guys think.
  3. im new to this forum,i have had my 94 sc400 for only ten days. im a car guy and feel i have a lot to offer this site. i just dont know this car very well at all. i have posted a few boring things on this site, but as i dont know this car i really could use the advice. but my last post seems like nobody would respond. i know someone knows about this,i just wish someone would help. i know as i learn this car more i will help the new guys out. so i will ask one last time and hope for the best. when i hit the gas i hear what sounds like a pinging noise,or maybe a valve clattering. a mechanic at lexus said a valve adjustment was not needed,he told me its very rare to need one,and very exspensive, about $900. i told me to buy b&g 44k and add it to a full tank of gas and it should go away. i only run 93 octane in it so i dont think its fuel. is this a normal sound for this engine? to me i still think its valve adjustment but lexus says no,any one have this noise? its got 189k highway miles on it. what could it be? thanks, ttcups
  4. i just picked up the cup holder assembly for my 94 sc400. the parts guy told me just insert it in the slot,it seems like im missing a part because there is nothing to hold it in there. anyone know how to install the cup holder?
  5. i have a 94 sc400 189k miles on it,when i get on the gas hard there is a pinging noise or chatter that sounds like a valve adjustment. its not a fuel problem i dont think,i use 93 octane. at idle it is quiet. is this a trait of this motor? do the valves need adjustment? can i drive it like this without a problem? thanks to all who respond. ttcups
  6. im a new sc400 owner,94 with 189k on it. regarding the timing belt i need help with the following: 1. if the belt breaks will there be any damage? 2.is it true that they almost never break unless the water pump jams up? i have been told by the service mgr at lexus that he has never seen one break unless the water pump goes bad,he also told me that if it breaks its a non contact engine so no damage will result. so he says save the money and other then being stuck some where fix it when and if it breaks. if he is right i will wait because cash is tight right now. is all this true? ttcups.
  7. sounds like the heat is nothing to worry about. thanks for the replys. any ideas on the clunking when letting off the gas and hitting the gas again. dealer says it should be the axel joint on that side. he said it is common on that car and not to worry unless it gets worse. is he right? ttcups
  8. just purchased 94 sc400 only had it for about 5 days, have two problems. 1. there seems to be some slack somewhere in the drive train,if you get above 30mph and let off the gas compleatly then hit the gas again there is a banging noise coming from the right rear. 2. there seems to be hot air coming in to the cabin even with the heat compleatly off, also the ignition key is hot when removed. i dont know these cars very well, are these to problems anything to be worried about? what is causing the banging noise? where is the heat coming from? thanks for any help, im a little concerned. ttcups.
  9. i just purchased a 1994 sc400,this is the first time i have driven one. im a 300zx fan but my wife wanted this one. i must say this is the best car i have driven, even with 189k on it. i paid $5100 for it,do you guys think i got a good deal? it is mostly highway miles. the one flaw in the inside is the steering wheel, its leather wrap is stained to the point of no return. is there a leather wrap that i can cover this with? any help would be great. im glad i found this site,i dont really know this car very well, please excuse the dumb questions i may be asking for a few weeks. ttcups
