  1. How is it that your whole water pump is bad when there is a leak? Wouldnt the seal just be getting old and leaking?

Water pumps are designed with a "weep hole" that act as an indicator when your water pump is wearing out and is in need of replacement. As mentioned, you will get a few drops where you park your vehicle.

    That's interesting, I didn't know that.

  2. I was actually thinking about this question a few days ago: why does my mileage drop during winter?

I live in MN too and every year I notice my MPG go down considerably during the winter. So a few days ago I googled that and found this: http://www.startribune.com/cars/11354696.html. Basically, cold weather does contribute to lower fuel economy.

17Lexus, check out my LS site for tons of maintenance tutorials. The suggestions the others have made are good.

  3. Tutorial says that resistance should be 5.1-6.3 ohms at 68 degrees, and higher resistance is a problem. However, I had no resistance whatsoever at 40 degrees. It just said 0. I was taking the reading (two black wires) with sensor still on the car to check it. Does this mean o2 sensors are shot? Im getting 9 miles a gallon city by the way. No cel or trac light. 91 ls400 170K.

    Thanks and great site...

I didn't have any codes or lights when I replaced my sensors but they were still out of spec. Man, if both your sensors read 0 I would say that's out of range! My *guess* is that your sensors need to be replaced, they don't last forever...some info on that here https://www.automedicsupply.com/faq.php?#change I think you might want to remove one and test it inside at room temp to be sure.

your tutorial says that resistance should be 5.1-6.3 ohms at 68 degrees. are you referring the 68 degrees to the engine temperature? or what temp. you are talking about ? Please help. Thank you.

I'm not sure really, the repair manual isn't always clear, but I would assume they are saying the sensor should be at room temp. I took my reading inside on the bench, at room temp.

  4. Ok, I found my notes on this. I **think** C12 (25v 47uf) is the main cap for the fuel gauge on 90-92 clusters. C16 (10v 100uf) also may have something to do with the fuel gauge. This is just from testing the caps I pulled to see if they were out of spec and C12 was the furthest from spec. I replaced all the caps on my boards so I can't say for sure. Let me know if these are truely the ticket!

  5. When the O/D light flashes periodically while driving it means you have a transmission code stored. Save yourself $100 and read it yourself, it's very simple: http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/intro/codereading.html

This happened to me before and I needed a solenoid and speed sensor replaced. Once replaced all has been good for over a year. The light is just the the check engine light, the car is telling you something needs to be checked out and/or fixed.

  6. My car did this too when I first got it, alarm randomly went off, sometimes in the middle of the night :blushing: . It turned out to be the front courtesy switches, they wear out over time. I would check your switches... http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/electrical/fcourtesy.html This happens because the doors are locked, so the alarm is armed, then one of the switches may open (since it may be worn/wearing out) and the system thinks someone has opened the door.
