The either the switch is bad or the actuator has a short in it. The fact that the air will switch for defrost suggests that the problem is in the switch.

I'd take it to an Advance Auto or Autozone and have them check the alternator and battery for free. If they check out then it could be a bad ground somewhere drawing the battery down or the starter solenoid could be on its last legs.

So I blew my head gasket today and I'm trying to decide whether to pull the motor and try to repair the damage or to sell the car. Because of some aesthetic flaws the value of the car as a whole is greatly reduced, but parting it out I may be able to make enough to constitute a reasonable down payment on a new car. The most valuable part of the car is most likely the rare 5 speed transmission. I looked on ebay and they don't even list this as an option, I work at a parts store and we don't have access to the manual transmission through any carriers. I was hoping that some one on this site might be in need of a replacement or want to do a conversion. If anyone has any advice or is interested in any parts feel free to email me.
