ED.
My sister called me tonight and said the temp guage on her 1996 was "up in the red for like 20 seconds" and has been jumping around. I told her what to do if it happens again and said I'd look at it tomorrow. Anywhere specific to start? I was thinking thermostat. Thanks. curiousB
I'd check the following: 1) If the guage is popping around quickly then maybe electric problem. Temp sensor or connector on sensor. 2) Has system been flushed recently? Maybe air in the coolant and the system needs to be burped. 3) Thermostat sticking. ED.
Good morning. I just missed my sister on her way to work but I wanted to check the level. I don't think she's had it in for coolant service so I am thinking either thermostat or a sensor. I could see that sensor being damaged from some recent stuff. Is there any way I can tell if the sensor is bad by testing it somehow?
jaswood
Check the operation of the radiator cooling fan(s) FIRST. Not just for flat out failure, may be intermittent due to wear of the commutator brushes. Oops, almost forgot to mention. The engine block cooling fluid temperature sensor seems to be highly prone to failure.
