I was driving one night, when suddenly I could not accelerate anymore and the car began to slow down and the battery sign came on. In addition, the wheel and pedals became stiff and the car was in a way 'shutting down' although I could hear the motor still running. I pulled to the right and put it in 'park' when I realized that at the front dashboard the 'P' was not illuminated. I shifted to 'R' 'N' 'D', etc but it showed no sign that the gears were shifting. I turned the car off in order to restart it. Upon turning the key, the starter seemed to spin/run but the car was not actually starting. As a result, the battery is dead. I know the battery was fine because i recently changed it. I also had the shift switch changed but the same incident occured. Any ideas as to what could be the problem. Does this seem like an electrical problem? Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tatyana

Did you check your serpentine belt? Sounds like it may have come off or broken(or maybe tensioner). That would explain the dead battery, stiff steering.

Worth a quick look.

How long ago was the battery change?

If there is something wrong with the alternator, you would have run solely from the battery and that doesn't last long
