jbyers2
The poorly-designed combination key/remote for my '99 RX300 cracked a couple of years ago, and I've used epoxy to repair it on several occasions. It's now in pretty bad shape, so I inquired at the dealer about repairing it. I was told that it can't be repaired, but could have been replaced under warranty. However, that option expired after 4 years (that was about 6 months ago). Now it will cost me $180 to replace the key -- grrrr! I've taken the key apart (see attached image file). The metal portion of the key is bonded to one of the plastic halves, although it will now slip out due to cracking. I understand there's a chip in the key -- perhaps inside the metal portion, or would it be contained in the remote unit capsule, where the battery is located? Are there any third-party options for repairing the key/remote?
