italyguy01
The craziest thing happened over the weekend. When going around a curve (1995 Lexus Es300) The steering went straight all of a sudden, and I had to oversteer to make it through the turn. Here what was happening was the rack-n-pinion was sliding back and forth in its mounts when you would turn the steering wheel. It moved about 2" to the passenger side and then popped back when you turned it left. Had the rack replaced about 10 months ago!! Anyway, a local shop tightened up the mounts for me as I had no tools (was on vacation). The odd thing is that they said that the rack bushings need to be replaced. So I thought the bushings always came with the rack but I guess they re-used the old ones. I called Lexus and they said they only show one rack bushing. I ordered it. But I can't believe that the rack would actually slide back and forth!!! It is tightened up now, but I am going to check it again to make sure. Anyone experience anything like this? Replacing the bushing best?
2JZTWIN TURBO
The rack can slide in the bushing. A worn or oil soaked bushing can cause this. Here is how its set up.
