A "slight" depression or lift of the button will only move the window during that action. A firm and full depression/lift will activate the automatic function. Most likely the FULL travel function, switch contacts, of the switch has failed.

My RX300 (2000) had intermittent problem on the front passenger side. It came up and down intermittently using either power switches (passenger/driver sides). After several tries even removed the window motor, I found that the problem was the power switch on the passenger side. i went to a Junk yard bought one for $50 and the problem was fixed.
