davidlk345
Well, I just wanted to post a new topic covering a common climate control problem. When your A/C / Heater Fan gets stuck on High, Medium, Low and it doesnt even though the digital display shows a different speed, the most likely cause is the Blower Motor Controller, AKA: Resistor, or Fan control unit. In the GS 300 Its exactly easy to get to, but not all too difficult either: 1) Remove the glove compartment (2 bolts below, 1 each side, and 3 srews top). 2) remove the ower kick panel below the glove box. 3) then remove the white air duct that blows air at the floor...the is a little trick: 3a) to remove the air duct youve gotto remove 1 screw underneath, and 3b) you MUST detach the wire harness near that attaches to the top of this duct... 3c) THEN you have to unplug a wire harness that attaches to the side of this duct. 3d) Then with a lot of finess and tugging you can remove the air duct. 4) next remove the large wire harness cluster on the left side of the CD changer...you have to unscrew a small metal bracket at the bottom of this harness cluster to do this..pull these wires toward you a little (outwards) and to the right (in front of the CD changer) as far as possible without stretching the wires... 5) and straight back and behind on the left side of the CD changer will be the blower motor controller. It has one screw on the right side holding it in, and the only asy way to get to this screw is by moving that wire harness cluster out of the way. The cost: $211 from the lexus dealer. Time: less than 1 hr to remove, install and put everything back. Have fun! - DK
pilotbob3
DK- Thanks for your help- I know it's been six years since you wrote your advice, but it made my day today. Replaced the blower motor controller in my GS400. The part seems to have been replaced with a newer part number, 87165-22050 which the dealer stocks for $235. My failure mode was that the fan speed ran on max for about one month, then the fan stopped totally. Replacing the controller fixed the problem. I've updated your fine notes with what I found on my GS400: 1) Remove the lower kick panel below the glove box (held in place by hidden snaps, just pull the panel down from the front lip. Remove the lamp/cord assembly by twisting the assembly half a turn. 2) Remove the glove compartment (2 bolts below, 3 screws top). Remove the connector to the glove compartment lamp and the cable held in place at the top of the compartment. 3) The blower motor controller is mounted behind a white air duct and a cable connector cluster panel to the left of the CD player. To access the controller you need remove the white air duct that blows air at the floor...this is a bit tricky: 3a) Remove the one screw holding the air duct to the bottom of the blower fan. Then, 3b) you MUST detach the wire harness near that attaches to the top of this duct... 3c) Then you have to unplug a wire harness that attaches to the side of this duct. 3d) Then with a lot of finesse and tugging you can remove the air duct. 4) To be able to remove the blower motor controller, remove the cable connector cluster on the left side of the CD changer. You have to unscrew a small metal bracket at the bottom of this connector cluster to do this, then pull these wires toward you a little (outwards) and to the right (in front of the CD changer) as far as possible without stretching the wires. 5) Straight back and behind on the left side of the CD changer will be the blower motor controller. It has one screw on the right side holding it in. Remove the cables and install the replacement. 6) While you are in the compartment, clean out or replace the air filter, it is behind a black snap on panel on top of the blower motor. Use a vacuum to clean out the compartment and fan cage (there were bits of debris that had fallen into my fan causing it to make noise).
