Starter Problems 1998 Ls 400

My wifes 98 LS was clicking upon starting and wouldn't start. I then cleaned the connectors and we drove it for a day and it was okay. The next day it was clicking again (like a bad connections) so I bought a new battery post and battery. When I hooked up the new battery the car started making this terrible whhinng sound. I turned the car off and the starter kept on turning without the key in the ignition! So I unplugged the ground wire and it stopped. Plug it back in starter started to turn again but car wouldn't start. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!

Hope you didn't reverse the Polarity...
