kenk
hello How do I dismantle the vent system in order to thoroughly clean it out? Or can I go in through the vents with some kind of tool and ream out the dust and mold? Also why is the fan only blowing air through the drivers side floor and dash vents and not through the passenger side ones. However, the windshield defogger blows both sides. Your input is much appreciated. Thanks
GuyTelefunken
More than likely, there is a problem with one or more air mix doors. Here are all the diagnostics you will need to figure out where the problem is. Read through them and run the diagnostic code procedure. Any codes found should lead you to the problem area. As for the smell, there is a service bulletin on this. The evaporator core needs to be cleaned and the drain checked. The bulletin recommends a special spray cleaner for this purpose. There may be a similar product available at an auto parts store or supplier. 04_Code_Diagnostics.pdf 05_Clear_Codes.pdf 06_Odor_Bulletin.pdf 01_Diagnosis_By_Symptom.pdf 02_Display_Codes.pdf 03_Code_Descriptions.pdf 07_Cleaning_Evaporator_Core.pdf

I was investigating under the dash and it didn't look possible without removing the entire dash. I'll try the spray soon if I can't get to it. GuyTelefunken
The MY98+ evaporator is located differently in the heater box. It is not easy to reach or clean. To get to it requires dissessembly of the heater box from underneath the passenger's side dash, evacuating the R-134a coolant, and removing the evaporator core from the housing. The system would then need to be recharged. Removing the core requires a special tool as well. This tool amounts to a long torx bit, but the job is still labor intensive. You might want to consult the Lexus dealer to see if they have any cleaning methods up their sleeve.
