A/c 1990 Ls400

I have a 1990 LS400 with about 135k. AC cut out awhile ago, just warm air. Did not hear compressor engaging. Records from the PO show the AC untouched since the car was new. After checking a lot of threads, briefly comtemplated buying freon on ebay and filling the system myself but never got around to it. Took the car to my indie. Lo pressure fine but high pressure side showed only about 50 psi with the engine running. Air was cold but not as I remembered it. Indie added 2# of freon and had no idea how long the charge would last. He said lo high pressure side indicates compressor failure and around $650 for reman compressor and expansion valve. If the compressor show signs of contamination, then $850ish to clean out the system.

Does this sound accurate? Is this a DIY? So far my experience is only up to fluid changes, brakes and rotors and swapping radiators.

Thanks all,

glenmore
