1998 Gs400 Question

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I had to change the rear brake pads today on the 98 GS400 as it started today with the metal on metal on the rotors. I was having a problem getting the rotors off to take them to be turned and made the mistake of removing the large nuts on the rear axle shafts thinking they were holding them on. Turns out it they were just on very tight due to the road grime etc. After getting them off I realized that I didn't have to remove the axle nuts but it was to late.

I had bought a GS400 manual on CD but it is really bad and doesn't have the torque specifications for these nuts.

Is there anything special that one has to do when putting these back together? Some rear axles require you torque it to one high specification and then loosen it and retighten it to a lower specification (seating the assembly).

Would anyone be able to post the torque specification for them and for the brake caliper (17mm) bolts?

I would really appreciate your help as it is Saturday night and there are no other options....

Thanks

Greg

77 ft. lb on the caliper bracket bolts and 213 (yes, 213) ft. lb. on the axle nut. A new cotterpin must be installed. You must hold down the brake pedal to torque this nut. Stress should not be put on the drivetrain.
