Jumping Terminals For Cel Codes

I have a 93 SC400 with a 170K miles. Had her for 7 years and been a great car.

Without any forewarning this weekend, she won't start - cranks but doesn't turn over. CEL light on.

My questions are about using the "paperclip" method to jump TE1 and E1 slots in the diagnostic box. First are TE1 and E1 the correct slots and two is it safe for my year - I don't want to cause anymore problems. Of course the owner's manual says CEL=Go to Dealer.

This sight rocks!
