matt_sabre
I have the Nakamichi CD Changer stereo, but it seems to have a problem playing my old tapes. With the radio and CD's, the sound is excellent but when I try to play one of my cassettes it sounds terrible. It is completely muffled as if it is coming out of just one speaker. Can anyone suggest what the problem may be??
GuyTelefunken
Very simple. The tape head and capstain pins need to be cleaned. You could try a cleaning-tape, probably the sorriest of alternatives. The best method is to remove the headunit, dissassemble and clean. Sometimes a drive belt will be found to be stretched and need to be replaced as well. It's not difficult, so long as you're handy and have a few small (jewelers size) screwdrivers. You can open the tape door with your finger and push in the tape carriage. It will come back into the loading position when you're finished and push [Eject.] You'll need some long cotton swabs and some head cleaner or isopropyl anhydrous-pure alcohol. This is not the stuff you get in the drugstore. That variety has water and possibly other crap in it. Get the good stuff at an electronics store. If you find the tapes still sound bad after a thorough cleaning, you may have a head alignment issue. Hearing only one channel is a classic sign of that type of problem. Oh yeah, you're still listening to tapes? Heck, I think Lincoln was up for election the last time I even saw a tape!
