Broken Temp Gauge

Recommended Posts

Since we have no idea what year your car is, exact instructions are hard to supply. You could include the year of your car in your profile, hint, hint :D

Generally, I would recommend hooking up an OBDII scan-tool and monitoring the temperature with it. You may also find DTC P0115, Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Malfunction. If the sensor is working properly, and showing normal operating temperature, then we know the cars thermostat and sensor are working. If not, we continue to diagnose. You said it was "boiling" so I imagine it is getting hot. The problem may be in the gauge itself.

There are three possibilities; the guage itself, wiring from the temperature sensor to the gauge, or the temperature sensor.

Attached are instructions for testing the sensor in a 1998 and above. The bad news is, a SST (Special Service Tool) is recommended to remove the sensor, most likely because of the difficult position of the sensor.
