  1. Once you have the plastic cover off it's easy to see how to unplug and remove the bulb.

I don't have pics but it's pretty straight forward.

Putting in a new HID bulb requires 4 things.

    1. Open up the back of the headlight by unscrewing the white/gray cap.

    2. Turn the connector on the back of the bulb counter clockwise to release it

    3. Unclip and remove bulb.

    4. Put new bulb in and work backwards.

Thx it worked, Lexus of Riverside wanted to charge me 376. plus tax on the bulb and 96 dollars to install it, what a rip off 500 plus for a bulb change. I went to Genuine auto parts purchased the identical bulb made in germany for 154. and installed it in under 1 minute. Thanks again for your assistance it saved me 350 dollars.

  2. This is confusing to me too. I think all IS300 low beams are HID. A D2R bulb at the dealer is gonna be over $200. I used to get them off Ebay for maybe $60 to $100.

If when you turn on your headlights the flash and then run blue for a few seconds then they are for sure HID. Halogen bulbs start right up at their normal more yellowish color.

I purchased the bulb, you are right it is HID, do you have any pictures to help me install it. Lexus wanted 386 plus tax for the bulb, i found the manufacturer in Germany got it for 154. through parts store in town. Lexus dealership is a rip off.

  3. Make sure you don't touch the glass on the new bulb with bare fingers.

Just rotate the little gray door a few degrees and it will pop right out. Pull out and unplug the braided wire. The bulb is held in by two wire clips. Pop the clips loose.. Make sure you are getting a D2R xenon HID bulb at about 4300 K color temperature. Make sure the rubber O ring is lined up when you replace the gray cover.

    THANKS FOR THE QUICK RESPONSE.

I AM A LITTLE CONFUSED WITH THE BULB TYPE, I WENT TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE YESTERDAY AND WAS TOLD I NEEDED THE HIGH DENSITY BULB 108 DOLLARS, SO I CALLED LEXUS WHERE I PURCHASED THE CARAND THEY ASKED FOR MY VIN NUMBER TO DETERMINE WHAT TYPE OF BULB AND SAID IT WASNT A HIGH DENSITY BULB. AND QUOTED 32 DOLLARS. THINK I BETTER DRIVE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND LET THEM PROVIDE THE CORRECT BULB AND THEN ILL INSTALL IT MYSELF.

  4. I have a 2002 IS300, front head lamp, the low beam went out. I need to change it before I get a citation. I called lexus parts and gave them my vin number and determined the cost of the bulb is 32 bucks, they want 96 labor to change it out. Is the bulb hard to change, I looked under the hood and it appears to be easily accessible I see a gray circular door to the backside of the lamp? can someone tell me if there is more to changing this bulb than what it appears.

    Thanks Rob :o

  5. Thanks for the support Smooth.

Kind of wanted to give an update in case anybody else come across this problem. I wanted to keep the stock Nav so I was looking into replacements... however today just for kicks I decided to turn my Nav back on and it had reset itself. So after the dealing saying I was screwed and asking for $1900 and looking at replacements at around $400, I now have my old Nav working just as good as it did before.

I wish I knew what happened to reset it, but I haven't even opened the screen for about a week because seeing the error message was *BLEEP*ing me off so much. If anybody wants to theorize go for it, but I've tried to get it to error out again with no luck; I can do everything just fine.

At this point, I'm just happy I have a working Nav back.

Gannon, I reset my nav, and it ended up going down again after 1 day.

Dont know what to do, dont want to spend 1900 to fix it

  6. I've had my IS for roughly 5 years now and this is the first major problem I have had. Unfortunately it is one problem that just kind of gets under your skin. Out of the blue I've been getting the "Can't read DVD, Check disk" error. It was only happening every so often at first but now has basically rendered my Nav inoperable.

    Actions Taken So Far:

    1) Pull out the DVD and check for scratches - Disk was flawless

    2) Took the car to the Dealership - Quoted me @ $1900 for a new Nav ECU

    - They said all they did was throw in a different disk and it still didn't work

I've been trying to find as much discussion as possible and the only other idea I have found so far is to try and do the battery ECU reset. (praying this works)

At this point I'm expecting the reset not to work so I have a couple of questions for anybody to answer...

Q: Is there anything else I haven't tried that could possible solve this dilemma?

Q: Can you buy the replacement Nav ECUs anywhere else for a more reasonable price?

Q: How hard would it be to replace the ECU myself?

Q: It seems that I would be better served (if none of the previous options work) to switch to an aftermarket Nav rather than paying $1900 to have the stock one fixed.

Q: If the previous is true what options do I have with my old system? e.g. it seems parts are still valuable.

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I learn more, but I'll leave it at this for now. Thanks in advance for any help.

  7. Fellow Lexus owners,

I have a 2002 Lexus IS300 with a navigation system, when I start the car the nav systems says unable to read dvd, check to see if correct map? Is my DVD player bad, the disc is the original, i ejected the disc and its brand new. I called lexus and the player costs $1500. to replace. Any suggestions to repair this one.

    any help is greatly appreciated.

    Rob

  8. push the slider open and push the slider in and hold it in.

Turned out to be even simpler. The power needs to be on when you open the slider. The disc pops right out then. If you open the door and then turn on the power, it just sits there.

Loaded right up and works fine.

    Thanks for the help folks.

Great, my nav is malfunctioning, says unable to read dvd. I reset it and then this morning it froze and went to a black screen?
