  1. Why people remove the alternator from the car to get it tested is always a mystery to me. You can test the alternator while it is still in the car. In fact, that's often the best way to do it. These yo-yo's at the auto stores do not really know what they are doing so your alt. could still be bad but they say its 'good'. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone found out the alt was really bad although it tested good at the store.

You can do this yourself, Papa. Just get a voltmeter and measure the charging voltage at the battery with the engine running and a load(headlights on). Don't replace the cables just yet but do some more testing before you decide on the next step. Take your voltage reading and report back here.

hey landar, I did the test and found it running at 12.2....terribly low for an alternator output voltage test. so I thru my extra alternator in and now the problem is solved. im glad to cuz the positive battery cable looked to be a complicated item to replace. now I have to do the power steering system, tight steering. I know theres a solution for this also(rack and pinion solenoid) and also my new radiator is leaking from the bottom hose, luckily I have extra parts laying around so I can do a quick swap. thanks again.

thanks buddy, I will do the test in the morning so please check back around noon mtn standard time. ill be getting these cables from a stock ls from a salvage yard as well...good to have extra parts laying around. but yup I did do an alternator test in the past but I forgot what the readings were but ill check again and get right back to you as soon as the sun rises here in phoenix. I really appreciate the help.

  3. I recently took out my alternator to get it tested because I had a battery light on, I noticed the 3 wires from the harness were barely hanging on and soon after broke so I fixed that. but after getting the alternator tested and passed I put it back on. then I replaced the inline bolt-in fuse for the alternator. now I turned the car on and the battery light is still on. next step im going for is the battery cables(replacing). anyone else have these issues? thanks for your help. I really hate these electrical problems.

  4. I'll be changing my high pressure line soon too (on my 2000 ls400). I'm interested to see how yours goes. Are you using salvaged/new Lexus parts or did you go aftermarket?

I went searching for a good donor car at the salvage yard. the one I found was very clean. The power steering pump was cheap too, I also got seats, alternator, bumper, fenders, rack and pinion and fuel pump...all in excellent condition. new paint job is next then new wheels. It might be hard to find a 2000 at any salvage yard but good luck man. I recommend using lexus parts and not aftermarket.

  5. Hello, need some info on my power steering pump, I replaced and plugged acv and now im at installing the high pressure line. I do know that it requires a copper crush sleeve or washer....my question is do I need the copper washer on both sides of the banjo fitting meaning "bolt then copper then banjo then copper then ps pump"? and can I use a dorman copper flat gasket washer for this? they are flat copper washers used for high pressure lines. lexls.com says to use a copper crush sleeve but I can't find one and other donors didn't have then when I removed the bolt( I went to the junkyard and took off the high pressure bolt to see what this washer looked like). and my other question is getting the center console out....its different from the gen 1 ls400 so I think I need to remove the cover from under the steering wheel and also the plastic piece inside the glove box to get the center console off. Thanks for your help guys.

  6. I dont think it'd be water...but i'll be sure to keep my engine bay a ok!!!but yeah battery cables are fine...tested the charging and starting system with a VAT-40 and everything seems to be fine...i even plugged in different scan tools and the ecm says that its "ok to drive"...of course i dont depend on the scan tools but i think it has somthing to do with the TSBs i found on alldata.com...its most likely the ecm...lexus changed up alot of things because consumers were getting poor drivability!!!but if anybody has any other ideas than it'd be greatly appreciated!!!

  7. Went out for a drive...pulled into my drive way and bam...my 95 ls just goes right off.I'm guessing some sort of electrical problem because a few nights ago when i turned my headlights on everything flickered...guages went crazy and then it went back to normal.and these problems have only happened once. and another thing is my brake light keeps coming on when im pressing the brake...sometimes it turns on for a while then goes off...then stays on again...anybody have any ideas? thanks.

  8. can someone point me in a direction to fix this malfunction...my 95 ls is fine playing 6 cds for a while but at random times the cd starts to change cds...for example...cd would be playing on 1 then stops the cd and goes crazy with the changing...goes from 1-2-3-4-5-6 quickly and won't load another cd...and when it does stop it goes into the same craziness...gets very annoying...then some of the buttons stop working. also have a problem with my radio lighting...it flickers and goes totally out when i turn my head lights on. sometimes it flickers back on though. thanks for the help.

  9. thanks...fluid level and my park brake are all a-ok...today it kinda stayed on for a longer period of time...mostly happens in the morning...it was about 36 degrees out here in Glendale....i'll prolly get it taken into a chassis class at AAI.have em check it out!!!but thanks guys.

  10. Hey guys...i was wondering if anybody may have an idea why my brake light(1995 Ls 400) keeps coming on for a varied amount of time...it doesnt blink or anything but just stays on for about 5 to 15 sec. brake pads are thick and fine...i may need my rotors machined but everything else is okay as far as i know...thanks....and it only happens when i push the brake pedal...not all the time but sometime.

  11. It sounds like you're talking about one of the two air hoses that connect the infamous air control valve (at the bottom of the power steering pump) to the engine air intake. I doubt that you need a preformed hose to replace this. You should be able to replace it with a length of rubber hose (of the same diameter) from an auto parts place.

Infamous Ehh...air control valve...well thanks alot amigo...i checked alldata.com and it didnt say the name of it...i think they should change the name to sumdata.com but hey man thanks...i was freaking out when i called the dealship and i tried to explain the hose and they gave me a price for on that was 181 dollars and another for 450 dollars!!!

  12. HEy guys i was wondering what the hose is called that hooks up to the front of the intake manifold for a 1995 ls400...the hose hooks to an area under the powersteering pump...if someone can help me it'd be great.there is a good picture of the hose on lexls.com under how to flush the powersteering pump...first picture its the hose to the left behind the power steering fluid return hose...the hose was a preflex hose and feels like plastic...that *BLEEP*er snapped on me!!!thanks guys.

  14. Hi guys, i recently bought a black ls400 due to some dumb*BLEEP* pulling out in front of me and causing me to total my 1993 ls400...but anyway....with my 1995 im having a cd player issue...its loading my cds but not playing them....then a Error display is shown...it say "Err 21". i was wondering if anyone knows how i can fix it if they might have had the same problem. There is alittle work to be done with this 95 but it should be fun...i was also wondering about the light bulb replacements....do the light bulb replacements match the same with the 93 to the 95....i still have some parts from my 93 and wanted to replace some stuff...i also want to ask anyone if they know where i can get new leather for a 95 ls!!!thanks everyone... B)

  15. My lex won't start after a short drive, replaced one radiator fan, gets hot and won't start, start seems fine when cold engine, but hot no start turning, i was wondering if it was a module or delay or some sort of sensor which prevents it from starting, if anybody has had the same problem and has fixed it then please give me a direction to go to...thanks!!!
