  1. So I had an issue with my fuse box being loose causing the cd player, a/c and brake lights to not work. Got my hands dirty, tightened a few bolts, yelled a few obscenities and voila! Got some progress!! YAY!!

Turns out the bolt that actually holds the fuse box in place needed tightened and now the c/d player and a/c work but still no tail lights. :(

Ive checked the wire harness in the trunk, checked the fuses, and also checked the bulbs. Everything looks pretty good. I'm pretty sure it still has something to do with the fuse box. (I believe this b/c, at one point, I could apply pressure to the fuse box with my foot and my tail lights would work!) Maybe a loose wire in the rear of the fuse box but im no mechanic. Does anyone have any info on removing the fuse box panel or has anyone ever had to? Im just looking for a little advice on how to properly remove it and maybe some signs that might help me solve the problem that i am having.

Ive only got a few days left to resolve this issue b/c my wife is gonna pop and i dont wanna get rear ended going to the hospital!!

Thank you for your help in advance!!

  2. Wow, I have never heard tell of that before. Sounds like someone has tampered with the fuse block sometime in the past. Is the car modified electrically?

other than the starter and small stuff like the cd player, no. Im a have a go at it this afternoon. pull out what i can and punch a few faces. Ill let you guys know what i find! Thanks for your time.

  3. Long story short i've come to the conclusion that my entire fuse box is loose. Brake lights, a/c unit, radio, and windows will not work. Sitting in the drivers seat, using the point of my left shoe, by applying an ample amount of pressure to the fuse box everything will come on, and when i remove my foot, everything i listed above will go out. Ive checked all the fuses and even the wiring harness in the trunk but those dont seem to be the culprit to my problem.

Possible short? Anyone else have this problem? Thanks for your time in advance!!

  4. Hi, Great site for resources but i was unable to find any info on my problem. Just went to a friends house parked and began admiring the beauty of such a great car, when i noticed the rear passanger wheel looked dangerously close to the wheel well. Checked the driver side and noticed i had a good 4-5 inches between the 20's and the actual wheel well. Went back to the passanger side and barely had an inch. Im assuming that its the shock/strut but since im not as automotively inclined as most of you here, im hoping that someone could clear up the confusion. I also looked at an access point to the rear strut and again am assuming that the rear dash and backseat need to be removed to have the work done. Has anyone done this themselves andd what kind of problems should i expect? thank you for your time and greatly appreciate your responses.

  5. ive yet to try my hand at soldering, so thats going to be the last of my attempts. Strange thing is i believe its a short and not the module, reason i say that is the brake lights were working momentarily but now they dont and neither does my a/c controller or my radio!!! I disconnected the system and took out the 12's so that it would be easier for my mechanic to replace the gas tank. I took the negative off the battery, disconnected the system, screwed around with the wiring harness after taking the system out, just in hopes of finding faulty wires but . . .nothing . . . i checked the bulbs, then played with the fuses for a min. Reconnected the battery when i decided to call it a day and poof the brake lights were working. went back to the fuse box to see if the radio fuse was blown b/c the head unit had not turned on . . . checked the brakes and they stopped working again.

someone mentioned something about a switch? maybe thats my problem or as i have guessed a short in the system. The powered mirrors dont work now too. Anyone know a good way to finding out how to track down a short?

  6. theres also a box located in the trunk by the left hinge, pull the carpet back and its mounted upright with lots of wires going to it

right i found that but couldnt see anything wrong with the wiring. i unwrapped all the wires followed them thru the trunk and back to the engine bay and everything looked good.

  7. Searched the forums for a good two hours now and still have yet to find specific info on my tail light issue. From what I've found it can be one of two things: the switch, when the brake is applied, may be stuck/faulty and or the wiring harness that is located in the rear of the trunk. Ive checked the fuses in both the engine bay and under the dash, nothing. So at this point im assuming its either of the two problems. id really appreciate it if someone could better explain what im looking for and of course a cheaper solution than what a dealer/mechnic has to offer. thanks for your time.

  8. We all get caught up in the excitement of buying a new car sooner or later and wind up missing a few things. Hopefully we eventually learn from our mistakes to take a deep breath and check out the mechanics before the money changes hands. Haven't heard of a fuel tank being replaced on an Ls before. What was wrong with it? How much history do you have for this car? At 90K, I'd want to know if and when the timing belt/pump/tensioners etc were done. You'll find the harness along with the p/s pump, alternator, strut bar bushings, instrument cluster, climate control readout issues are common to this model. You can start with:

for info on most of these.

The tank some how got punctured by the tiniest pin hole and leaks into the trunk. Had some jb weld and tried to patch it but it was a no go. So i found a tank at a local junk yard already pulled for $50. I dont have any history on the car and was considering a carfax but that extra $25 is going towards immediate repairs. (Im trying to find an apartment as well, so there goes the 47" tv fund :( ). Pretty sure the majority of the repairs your talking about have yet to be done but hopefully will be addressed very soon depending on the costs. Thanks for the link and taking the time out to help. Greatly appreciate it.

  9. Welcome to the LOC. No need to panic! What's in the $1000? There's plenty of information on your Ls here. I suggest you do some research on the symtoms your experiencing, then post your questions here. You'll get better response if you show that you've done some of the legwork yourself, rather than getting spoonfed. Another suggestion is to include as much info as you can in your posts. Hard for members to offer help if there's no details. Good luck.

thanks for taking the time. Ive had to replace the gas tank, rear brakes ( dont currently have all the tools or a garage to work in, otherwise i would have done them myself), guage cluster is going out this week/next week as well as the a/c controller, typical 90k fluid changes, replaced headlamp bulbs, a few studs and lugs, next to be rear wiring harness/wires (not exactly sure if this will solve my tail light issue *crosses fingers*), and have yet to find out whats gonna keep it from passing inspection. (The labor for the brakes and gas tank is what really put it up there.) Just wish i had a place to work on it myself, and more time before inspections due.

  10. LEXUS LS 400 WITH 94000 ORIGINAL MILES-BRAND NEW 20 INCH RIMS - $4000 . . . . .

Thats what the craigslist posting showed. I figured, hell im in desperate need of a car, lets check out. Blinded by the glit and glam, i took it for a drive and ended up buying it. Caught up in the "new car" high, i failed to pay attention to the small things . . . lol . . . Sure its a used 1991 so its gonna need some work: brakes, oil change, a/c recharged . . . but had i not been caught up with other things in mind . . *sigh* . . . i would have noticed like any right minded individual that this cars needs lots of work.

I drove it for about 30 mins. with the previous owner and other than the brakes (cuz of the rims ) it seemed like a hell of a steal. One day later . . . $1000 + in work . . . . lets just say ive been had . . .

Enough about me, now on to more important things. Does any know where i can find an owners manual? possibly a download? Or even info on the fuse layout? The tail lights aren't working, ive checked the fuses but some of them could be missing. Also the telescopic steering wheel isnt working. It'll telescope, lol, but it wont move up or down.

    thanks for your time
