  1. I filled up with regular this week and I am telling you it is lasting forever what is up? I filled with Exxon Regular I think its 87 Octane. The same exact miles to work and back the same mundane cycle every week except by thursday I usually need a fill and I still have a 1/4 tank, I am really blown away, how could this be?

You get better mileage in warm weather for one

Summer gasoline has different contents in it too in case they changed over recently at your local stations.

There's plenty of other factors that impact mileage too.

But I can tell you that all else being equal it's impossible to get better mileage from lower octane fuel. There's nothing chemically inherent in lower octane that can cause that to happen. If your car is designed for 91 you will either get the same or worse with 87 if all else is equal depending on how much the ECU is having to adjust Problem is all else is virtually never equal.

In the meantime you're damaging your engine though.

Like I said, if you don't plan to keep the car a long time, and plan to lie to the next buyer, this won't be a problem for you, as the damage will likely take a long time to be apparent.

how can 2 or 3 in octane be that much damage seems kinda weird, I am not convinced its as bad as you say. I without a shadow of a doubt am getting more mileage. The weather was the same temp so no major deviation.?

I am going toput the same brand premium and see.

  3. Hello Everyone, first time poster here.

I know a lot of people think the IS (atleast the 250) is a woman's car. I tend to disagree, however I do understand where they are coming from as I see more women driving these cars than men.

That being said, what is everyone's advice on making your IS that much more manly?

I don't have much money to spend, but I figured a few little upgrades like tint, and new headlights might do the trick. I have a silver stock IS 250 and would love to hear everyone's opinions on making the car look a little sexier for not too much money.

When I drive my wife's IS250 - her personal plate reads: SEXELXE - and I pull up next to a great big dude scrunched up in a little Mini Cooper, I don't have any problems with my manhood!!:lol:

I disagree i think the car is masculine out of the box. Especially looking at the front or seen in rear view mirror. Also I have never seen a woman in one and I have been seeing alot of IS's all of the sudden all over. But a chick in an IS IS PRETTY FREAKIN HOT! sOME NICE HEELS STEPPIN OUT, sniffy sniffy MMMMM (oops sorry got carried away a minute)lol

  4. It's also not uncommon for a light coating of rust to form on the rotors overnight. Especially in rainy/humid conditions. This is usually removed quickly with the first application of the brakes, and not noticed throughout a trip.

For me, this happens sometimes when I back out of my driveway in the morning.

Anything more than that is probably an indication of a greater problem, IMO.

Good answer, thats exactly when I did hear it, in the morning backing out. The car is new with 4,000 miles and just had 5k service.

    TX Guys!!

  5. It only happens in ours when we catch some air off the top of a hill. Well, when we hit the ground that is....NOT. Of course I would never abuse the IS like that!

Really tho...sounds like you got some bugs in that stereo that need purgin! Crazy stuff! Maybe your car doesn't like your taste in music ;)

    100 posts. Congrats.

    LOL

It may have something to do with bluetooth, the common facto was I was on the phone when it happens!

  6. The "what gas are you using" thread was combined out of a bunch of gas threads. It was pinned to make it visible and for people to add comments. This was to prevent the proliferation of more gas threads cluttering up the forum. This thread is being moved there for the same reasons. The topic can be discussed in the pinned forum just as well as anywhere else.

    ok Bartkat no prob!

  7. Tankers pull in with regular that has had a additive dumped in the tanker and splash blended. Whose to say how much? I am smelling scam with this.

These are interesting if you have time.

"Manufacturers want to be able to quote high horsepower numbers," Brauer said. "If it's not run on premium, it probably won't ever hurt the car. It probably won't ever be noticed by most drivers. But they can still have their claimed horsepower for their brochures."

  8. I decided to open a varying discussion on the 'what gas have you been using discussion' Topic. This is the last 2 comments at the end of the pages of that topic, i brought up what I feel is a valid point.

Can I use regular gas in my IS 250?

Just Kidding!!! Lets discuss the possibility that you spend the extra money on the Premium and it turns out that its Regular anyway. How can any of us even know if we are getting what we are paying for anyway. The number on the pump is a number. Does weights and measures or someone even make sure stations are doing the right thing?

Stations are closing down left and right with the pricing going crazy, Exxon is getting out of the gas station business and selling all the stations. Transport companies that haul gas are also getting out of the business. This will all lead to more shady situation.

I see gouging all the time, I can go 2 miles and see a .10 price difference and they really overcharge premium.

In conclusion can we even trust we are getting high octane gas?

Yes, most states have a govt agency (usually some kinda weights/measures place) that inspects that stuff pretty regularly.

Honestly, it's not worth them risking being put out of business to make an extra $2 a tank off people anyway.

Oil and gas companies are always getting busted for fraud. A huge NY company just got busted for pumping air into the line so that the electronic registers pulsers would think it was more fuel. They ripped everyone off for 17 years. 2 bucks adds up, they make small margin on selling gas.

  10. Is it possible to disable the inability to use the navigation while car is moving? It *BLEEP*es me off that my wife cant look up a freakin address while we are going somewhere. Its so stupid, what happened to freedom of choice. The same crap technology is on my sequoia which is the same software.

One of the many reasons I saved 3k on the factory nav and got a $300 garmin that does a bunch more stuff and doesn't cripple itself in drive :P

But yes, there's 3 ways to override that-

    1) Own a 2006 and never update the maps/firmware- For these folks there's a software override you can do each time you start the vehicle to remove the lockout.

    2) Physically take apart the center stack and hack some wiring- this works on all years on the 2IS, but obviously has potentially unpleasant warranty ramifications.

    3) There's a kit they sell in Japan that will work on the US-spec 2IS that does the same thing as #2, but it plugs into the wiring instead of you having to cut it up- you'll still have to take stuff apart though... it runs about $300

you are a wealth of knowledge knight! that sux not easier fix however I am going to try your seat belt fix today thanks again!

  11. Thanks a lot that thing was so annoying, you're a big help

I have the 08 and I have the same problem. I have given up using it for my bluetooth phone connection. Its easier just dialing off the phone, then bluetooth picks up the call anyway I have given up on the voice commands. Its a novelty the salesman can show off.

To change the temp its easier to hit climate and click down the temp arrows, by the the time she gets it right your frustrated. i havent used it since the first day or to show someone it had it. I am very disapointed in that and the mapping is not great either,my sequoia has the same mapping and it sucks.

  13. i know the older gen of LS have built in radar dect from LEXUS. my friend has one. its pretty cool. it is flush in to the dash.

This one is bluetooth and is installed on all sides. It is hidden too. Its radar laser and jammer. I am going to shop around 1500 is expensive especially if its bluetooth, they dont have to wire it around the car they do have to remove the dash panel . Im not sure I can do it myself I would hate to damage my car.

  14. Does anyone have the hidden radar Lexus is pushing. If so I would like to know how you like it? Also is it possible to install yourself. I am hearing $1500 installed does that sound high?

    TX

I have an Escort mounted on the windshield. Texas must be one of the few states in which it is illegal to have a detector, huh?

I aam pretty sure NJ is illegal also. tx will

LOL... Sorry. I saw the 'TX' at the end of your post and thought, "He must be from Texas!". Then, after replying, I saw your profile and realized that you are from NJ.

I was rather tired yesterday, and it showed in my reply!

    no prob!

    Not illegal in NJ. :)

Really, thats awesome! Is the jamming illegal?

    tx for fyi joe!

  16. The unit is called Calibre, has anyone heard of this? It sounds too good to be true, I would love to kick "the mans !Removed!" with this unit ists hidden. They guarantee if you get a ticket they will pay it?

Hard to imagine a Lexus dealer endorsing this and then guaranteeing it. Or are you saying it's a manufacturer's guarantee?

Its def manufacturer but Lexus will sell it and install it. they tried to close me on it when i got the car the credit manager had his list of "your an idiot if you dont get this" extra coverage, extra insurance yada yada and on that list was this radar detector.Which i sort of wished i considered it actually when i got my speeding ticket last week
