  1. I have developed what seems to be an odd noise coming from the driver's side door.

When I go over large bumps, manhole covers, railroad tracks, significant objects, the driver's door makes a noise like it is partly open/not quite closed.

The door is shut all the way and the windor is all the way up. I can't produce the noise by shaking the door in the driveway or trying to move the window by hand. I am taking it in so service can see if anything is loose inside.

    Just wondering.

I have bad news for you. My recently bought GS 430 seems to have the same problem. Seems like the dealer left that out in our coversations. Anyways, is seems that this is a common problem with the GS's from 06-08 possibly even 09! What's worse is that my door seems to have fallen a bit or slightly tilted? It now gets rubbed against the fender making a clicking noise everytime you open the door, where as to now, it has bugun to chip the paint. My car has 80k miles, depending on how many yours has, it could get worse if you don't get it checked, I think the door needs to be rethightend, but i'll wait and see what the dealer tell me.

    I'll repost later.

There should definetly be a recall on this issue because it definetly is a hazard when your door tilts and air is getting throught the seals of the door... someone could possibly end up ejected, hardly, but hey? it ccould happen, Lexus should just own up, these cars are to expensive for the buying customers, specially the ones that pay with 0 milage! And it's a common problem!

I get the feeling that the Dealers have just about had it with the 3rd gen GS. I've had mine in 4 times with a host of issues plus the 3 recalls. They are nice enough, because that is how lexus trains them but I'll bet they are screaming !Removed! murder at corporate for shipping this lemon down the pike.

lets face it: the 3rd gen GS has more problems than any other lexus in history. this one model may well cost them a lot of future customers. I'll never get another Lexus. It's the creaky dash that just cannot be fixed that kills the whole experience.

and really, it doesn't ride that well, it's not really very quiet. and the german competitors handle better and have more curbside cachet.

  2. I have a 2006 GS 430. I've noticed a noise that appears to be coming from the front left speaker area. Just recently I took the car into the dealer to have it checked out, the dealer told me that they added additional foam sound proofing and tightened up my drivers side door panel. The noise is still there. I don't expect the LS ride on my GS but don't think we should have to live with a rattle noise. Has anyone else experienced this? I want additional info before I go back to the dealer and raise hell. Any help is appreciated.

    -George

We have the same car and had same problem. Brought the car back to dealer at least 5 times. They put rubber piping betwwen winshield and dashboard, removed side door panel and reinstalled for gap between door and dashboard, finally took the whole dash board out adjusted speaker cover, reinstalled the dashboard. Seems working now. it's more noisy when weather is cold. It's common problem and Lexus know about this. They are trying to improve since it's the first year of this body style..

i just took my 06 gs300 in for the 'dash treatment' a 2nd time. they had it a week, did Everything. (plus 3 recalls) and it is exactly a creaky as before.

it's not a rattle, it's an insanely persistent creak on the left side. There is nothing they can do. If you've the creaky GS, you've the creaky gs and that is that.

  3. KBB list your car at $19500 thru private party sales at fair condition. Most 2006 GS have been going for low $20 K, which is a average deal. A great deal for a 06 GS would be $20K or below with more options. Enjoy your GS and dont sweat it.

Ouch! I haven't been following pricing for the GS for several months now, but low $20K stings. I have a 2006 GS (which I bought used in June 2006 for about $39,000 - AWD with navi, no ML). In hindsight I certainly feel like I overpaid, but even then, I've lost almost 50% in less than 2 years. Aren't these cars supposed to be good/reasonable in terms of depreciation?!

yeah i bought that same car but WITH ML and everything else (i didn't know they made any with navi but no ML)

but I got mine 2 years old, in 2008, for $35,000 (see above post)

  4. Deal of the century? No.

    Average deal? Yes.

Oh gee, there must be at terrible flaw in my research methodology. Perhaps you can guide me back to the right path so I won't make the same mistake next time.

Let's see, I researched for 3 months every conceivable source (i.e. the web, local dealers, private party sales.) and could not find this vehicle anywhere near my ultimate purchase price. Please direct me to the sources that render my deal as "average".

As to the "Deal of the century" quote, that was obvious hyperbole and was meant in jest.

Don't sweat it, these forums are famous for EVERYONE saying you got ripped off, and they paid $19k for an '08 GS 460 with 9k miles loaded blah blah.

No one ever beats a 'forum' deal. :

I got ripped off by a long shot, having paid $35,000 a year ago for my '06 gs 300 awd with 20k mint loaded.

And yes, I know your frustration, I did a ton of research looked for about a year, finally found the used one I wanted in the color/equipment/mileage etc. and I could not find that car for under $40k until i found mine a giant lease return center. Auto Lenders in Toms' River NJ. that car was over $50k in the showroom in 2006. I thought $15k off two years later was a good deal at the time.

Yet I came in here and apparently everyone else has a secret link to Lexus's for half price. It IS Annoying.

  5. Yes, I have a 2008 GS460. Have not had any brake noise problems but a host of others making ownership beyond very frustrating. Bad interior pieces

    Bad leather Pass seat

    Bad armrest cover

    Bad door sill inside

    Dash rattles

    Mirror motor failures- both

    Tire pressure warning not working

Auto air recirc note working properly

Window clips causing rattles in top and it goes on and only 8600mi.

Have a 2005 SC430 and no real problems only a couple of minor ones.

    Good luck!

dang, sounds like the newer GS's can be just as bad as mine. I thought those kind of problems were isolated to the '06 models. if the economy didn't suck so badly, i'd seriously consider unloading mine and switching to a 3 series coupe.

  6. I am about to buy a 2006 GS300 with 16,000 miles for $33,500. It has a number of options including Nav and wood insert steering wheel. I am replacing a 1995 HOnda Accord EX that we have owned since new and the Honda and the Lexus will be driven by my wife 100 percent of the time. I some info

    1. For the same price I can get a new leftover 2008 IS250 with Nav. Is the 2006 a better choice since I plan on keeping either one for at least 10 years ?

    2. If I go for the GS300, Is it worth getting an extended LEXUS warranty ?

    3. How do I tell if I have the Mark Levinson radio ? Salesman says it does, but I cant find any name on the radio face.

    4. Other than the rattles that I have read about on this forum, is there any other problems with the car as far as reliability, etc ?

    5. What is the true gas mileage it gets on the highway and on city streets.

    6. I live in New York and we test drove the car the other day in packed snow. We stopped on a small slope and it had a very hard time with traction. I believe it is the Bridgestone Protenza tires. They are not the run flats. Tirerack rates them poorly, but I dont know if it was the car or the tires that did not impress me. Any comments on how the car performs in snow and what type of tires are you using.

    7. Since I dont have a manual, what does the switch in the center console do that says ECT/SNO ?

Again, my wife is undecided between the 06 GS and the 08 IS250. I know they are completely different but I am more concerned with long term reliabilty and comfort. Again remember that the GS has 16,000 miles and the IS is new.

    Thanks

    1. It all depends on what you are looking for. The IS and GS are two different cars. Given you experience in question 6, look at an IS 250 AWD (what price is that new.) Evidentally the GS is not the AWD version. As for price, consult KBB.com or vehix.com to see what dealerships should be getting for the same car with the same options in you area.

    2. It all depends on the extended warranty you intend to get, what you have to pay out of pocket, what the plan covers, what you deductable is and how well you maintain your vehicle before the warrantly goes into effect. Personally, I have no need for extended warranties. They will cost me more than I will put into the car. However, keep in mind that one pricey service after the regular warrantly expires can be the price of the entire extended warratnly plan. So the bottom line is what is it worth to you to have piece of mind.

    3. It will say Mark Levinson right on the face plate around the NAV screen.

    4. you can look on www.alldata.com to get a list of all TSBs that have come out. There is one major one concerning an awful noise upon cold start and there has only been one recall for a fuel rail fix.

    5. I have a 2006 GS300 AWD and get about 22-23 mpg around town and I can hit 30 mpg on all out highway cruising. The ECT selector is in the normal position. Mpg will be lower if you use the Power setting.

    steviej

Man, i wish i could get that kind of city mileage. Do you have a lot of long lights, and have to make short trips? I basically drive back and forth to work, only 10 miles round trip. I dont burn much gas total, fillup 2x per month but as i said i'm barely getting 17 mpg. My ave trip speed is about 20mph. it's painfully slow.

I think you can beat them up on price, given the economy. I paid (overpaid I think) $35,500 for that exact car about 6 months ago except it was an awd. Every option except radar cruise and parking sensors. Mine had 20k on the clock. only 16k on a 2006? That is extrememly low mileage, but I wouldn't pay a penny over $30,000.

You'll see other people post here that you can get that car for $25,000 or even less. I dunno, apparently some people have access to a secret supply of used GS3's that are $10,000 below Kbb.

It is an AWD. I checked thier carfax and says only one owner. It did have the front and rear pads replaced and rotors cut when the dealer got it in Nov of this year. I figure the low mileage and the fact that it needed brakes front and back, means it was probably used in the city or short trips with alot of braking.

My other concern was the fact that when the dealer got it in November, they replaced both the front pads and rear pads and resurfaced all the rotors and installed two new tires.

The car only has 16,000 miles on it and it leads me to beleive it was probably used for local driving or city driving since all the brakes at to be replaced at such low mileage.

I checked their carfax and it shows one owner, leased and only had the routine maintenace done each year.

    Also,

I had my rear rotors resurfaced under warranty, at about 23k. I have 25.5k on it now. It's a pretty heavy car, which i think tends to cause early rotor warp. I wish i had a GS 350 rear wheel drive. But in the Northeastern corridor, most of them are awd.

my tires are General UHP, non original. I think most people replace the horrible OEM Dunlop runflats, because they are noisy, make the ride stiff, and don't stick well. So dont worry about tire replacement, be glad the runflats are gone.

btw, i have several irritating creaks squeaks rattles etc that do not belong in what was a $50,000 car 2 years ago. I've bitched about it here a lot. Dealer just says, 'we've done everything we can'. I did have the right a pillar clonk fixed. but i think it's back. You really hear them moving slowly around town. It's very frustrating, one of the reasons I went with Lexus was to avoid those kinds of problems, because i really hate that in a car. It's a good highway car, very quiet, and you dont hear the rattles.

overall though, after 6 months, i have to say the GS kind of underwhelms. Things I like best:

Styling. I dont think the motoring press gave Lexus Nearly enough credit here. This is a very, very elegant swoopy looking car inside and out. I get compliments all the time. I think it's 100% better looking than the M, the 5, the RL, the A 6 and the Cadillac STX.

I like the engine / 6 speed auto trans combo. It is silky smooth, no matter what the conditions. I can get over 30 mpg highway, but in the most brutal city conditions, (long lights, endless stop and go) I'm honestly at 16.5. Which sucks, I See 430/460 owners claiming 20 around town. I may as well have gone for the V8.

Also, 258 hp is 50 hp shy of where it should be. You would do well to find an 07 350, but i saw in consumer reports that the 07 350 awd had a poor reliablity record.

The nav/ML are very nicely executed, would not be the same car without them.

But dislikes are pretty strong, and they grow more annoying each time I drive it. The aforementioned rattles. The lack of power, there is a moderately musty smell when the A/C has not been run, the climate control takes 3 clicks more than you need to adjust, the hidden buttons in the pod are gimmicky and it gets old having to open the little door every time. There's not a lot of passenger room, but i can livewith that, I wanted a good looking car, and so I pay the price.

mostly if it didn't rattle, I would be a lot happier with it.

  9. I've seen several people mention various TSBs for problems. How can I get my hands on those? In particular, I'm having a pretty serious dash rattle that someone said had a TSB to resolve.

Anyway, would love to get a link or something on this.

    Thanks,

    C

Rattles, squeaks, creaks, knocks it's maddening. totally unacceptable for a $50,000 'luxury' car. I'm ready to trade mine in, no matter how much I lose.

  10. Hey all,

Just wanted to say thanks to all who shared their input over the summer with me.

I started looking and asking you guys Q's 4 months ago! This really is a great informative forum..I started out wanting the GS300, and hardly saw any 430's so I then drove the 350, fell in love but just decided it was outta my range..and I was was adamant about finding a one owner-private pty non leased FL car with the goods...It wasent easy..SO I found a local 06 430 this week, had it inspected friday at my local Lex dealer and pulled all service records, no paint work etc, everything worked out. I gave a deposit and I am currently waiting for the title to be fedex'd to the owner to seal the deal monday or tuesday. It has a bit more miles than I wanted (47k). But compared to most that I drove with 30k+ mi. it was far cleaner than all..I may have paid a premium vs some ive seen on ebay, but felt like it was just the one for me, and I wasent seeing that many 430's fully loaded, that were close to me in the southeast. She's matador red on black...ML+NAV etc, and a color that I rarely see here in FL.. :D

I loved the way the V8 felt vs the 350 with the added torque, and can accept the milage for the smoothness.

Paid 27.5k... I have the sticker that says $58,xxx...so I think I did OK. I called the guy over in Shreveport about getting a Ext. Platinum warr. His quote was WAY below what my local dealer qouted.. Anyone have past dealings with him? He was very polite and quick so I will go for it if that is the extended of choice on the board? I will post pics just soon as I can get some zaino on her! Just wanted to share my excitement and say thanks to all.

    -GS

well, no matter what you paid, everyone here will say you got ripped off.

  11. If you are going to get the GS300/GS350 AWD you better get it certified!

I heard really bad things about how it needs to be serviced quite often because it comes out of alignment. I'm not considering an 06+ AWD GS.

the current gen GS is a gorgeous but deeply flawed machine. It should ride smoother, have no rattles/squeeks, have better steering, and be faster (the 300 anyway). Also, around town, my mileage has been 16.5 lately, and that's with a gs300. I may as well have a gs460.

  12. No doubt for an 06 GS300 that is doable actually you should be in I would think the 29-30K range. Just went looking this weekend and saw a 06 GS300 with 38K miles for 32,997 list so yes.

GS350 if you find one with about 35K miles and no ML, NAV, or rain wipers... With some hard nose negotiating and depending on how they got the vehicle (trade or auction) you may get into the 34-35 rangeish... But again depends on what they have into the car. Every car is different. The dealer told me that the certification and 100K warranty was about $995 of the price of the car. A small price to pay for 60K more miles under warranty.. Especially if you are buying an off lease auction car...

In may '08 i got an '06 GS 300 awd with everything except radar cruise and park sensors. 20k miles, showroom condition. I probably overpaid - $35,500.

Now it rattles more than a rental hyundai, (of course it was dead silent on the extensive test drive) and I'm going try once again to get a dealer to fix it next weekend.

  13. your expectations weren't high, like me, you probably expected the lexus to be at least similar to MB/BMW or other European cars. Hondas are the closest thing to Europeans in terms of putting together a tight ship.

yeah good luck with the mb. I just hope you dont run into major repair hassles like it seems the German brands have been experiencing. a rattle free car isn't much good if it's at the dealer every other week. and when the warranty runs out, $$$$ out of pocket.

  14. 2006 GS430. I do mixed driving in Sacramento where it goes from stop & go to 80 mph. I average between 22-24 in these conditions depending upon how lead-footed Im feelin. On the freeway, exclusive freeway driving yields 25-28.

I recently bought an 06 GS430. I did a 1500 mile trip and had a hard time getting more than 26mpg on the highway. Wondering how you achieve 27 or 28. I ran 35psi in tires and left the cruise on. I averaged 74mph on the highway. Around town I am getting 20-21 and 19 driving fast.

well, i'm even worse shape, with a dog-slow gs 300 awd, that is struggling to make 18mpg on my current commute. It is very short, and I have about 13 stoplights, all of which are infuriatingly long. i spend more time idling and accelerating from a dead stop to about 30-50 mph over and over. I may as well have gotten a gs 430 or new 460. Doesnt sound like the worst condition mileage is tht much worse.

i can get over 30 mpg on the open road if I keep it under 65 and use the cruise. but there's so much traffic that you constantly have to brake and accelerate.

  15. The point of my comment is that people automatically assume that people who spend a lot of money for a vehicle or have a lot of money don't care about fuel efficiency. Lexus thinks so too, thats why all their hybrids are performance oriented. But, now they're planning a hybrid based on efficiency and not performance. Lexus hybrids sell well, but they don't sell out the way efficiency based hybrids do.

Average income of a Prius owner and a GS owner are about the same. $120k for the Prius, $150k for the GS.

You said you felt it was ironic he would care in a car at that price point...

I see TONS of prius's and GS's around. I find it very hard to believe that all those owners make $120 or $150k on average.

    I only make $95 and drive a GS. I guess I'm poor.

  16. I bought an 06 GS300 AWD about 4 months ago expecting a very quiet, well-built, reliable car...well, reliable it has been but it's been a very squeaky, rattly ride til i just couldn't take the little eeks and the cheap plastic sounds the car made at every little bump and everywhere i touched inside the car, like the middle storage area, the plastic on the doors, etc. The car felt SOOOOO flimsy. I even had the dealer wrap felt around every part of the front dash and it only made the noise lower in volume. I can't believe that a 3 year old Lexus that cost over $50k new should behave like this.

So after 4 months of this crap, i finally got rid of it. Went to a dealer and traded for a 04 E500 4Matic with similar miles for an even trade. The MB is totally solid. No squeaks or rattles, just that solid feel.

I don't think I'll ever go back to Japanese. Sure MB might be less reliable but I'll trade the daily serenity for a bit less reliability ANY DAY. The noises were driving me nuts and the passengers usually told me that i should take the car to the dealer for the noises.

Getting rid of a car because of these noises...is anyone else thinking the same???

btw, what'd the MB dealer give you in trade on your GS 300? and how many miles were on it.

  17. yep, i'm almost in the exact same position. I bought the same car about 5 months ago, used, with 20k miles. Has ML/Nav/Vented-heated seats/rear sunshade/moonroof/ etc etc. Everything except radar cruise and parking sensors. I paid $35,500 back in may. seems like everyone here claims they have been getting the same car for under $30k.

anyway, i have the same irritating squeeks, rattles, and odd interior noises. Took it to one dealer, who did the right A-pillar fix, and that did silence a persistent rattle. But over the past few months, i'm getting and endless creak on the left side, the console rattle, and just like you describe every little bump sets off a cacophony of minor but noticeable noises. It's just so frustrating.

took it back to a different dealer, and they of course said "Nothing we can do. technician didn't notice anything unusual. The first dealer did the whole dash kit fix already."

A $50,000 2 year old Lexus with under 25k on the clock should not sound like this. It doesn't feel or look cheap, but it sounds cheap. I've driven rental Kias that rattles less.

cant sell it now, not in this economy.

i feel completely hosed, and *BLEEP*ed off. I hate Lexus, I hate driving it because my expectations were so high.

  18. So I go to work today, and park on the 5th level - AWAY from everyone else to avoid any dings on my beeutifool lexus.

So I return to the car and what do I see?

A HUGE FAT BLACK BIRD (crow or raven?) WALKING AROUND ON MY ROOF RANDOMLY PECKING AT ITS REFLECTION!

    wtf mother nature?! wtf?!

Mother nature is punishing you for buying the Guzzler 430 and not the Hybrid. Carbon foot print and all.

  19. Honestly, the more we try to avoid damages to our cars, the more that the damage comes to our cars. That's what I've noticed with my car, usually I try to park it far from the rest, and still people (luckily no big scratches or dings from anything) park ridiculously close to my car, with the higher risk of door dings and what nots.

I think Lexus's enrage some people, especially when you park far away from the herd. they are compelled to park their '89 Impala right next to you and 'accidentally' leave massive dings.

i had some lady steal my gas pump yesterday when i was clearly waiting to back into it (and had been there 5 minutes already)

never happened to me before in my beater '92 Civic. Oh well, people clear the left lane a lot more quickly when i'm in the GS 300 trying to maintain a good clip. It's a very aggressive car to appear in your rearview.

  20. Dealer visit: 1

    1. Test drive with a technician who heard the wind noise - not abnormal. Wind vortex psycho babble ofered as the cause.

    2. Test drive with another 2006 GS300 - no wind noise.

    3. Tech applied a spray and then a vasoline looking silicone lubricant to the seal.

    4. Results wind noise has not gone away.

    5. Car will go back to the dealer when the miror comes, and they will adjust the moonroof until they get it right (and no water comes in).

PS - Tilt up & down on the passenger side mirror died, new mirror is on order.

What'd you pay for this thing? you got ML / Nav? how many miles?

  21. I am a new owner of a 2006 GS300 AWD (previous vehicle was 1992 Honda Accord - so I am in heaven). I have noticed wind noise coming from the closed moonroof when I get up around 70 mph. If I pull the shade closed, the noise is not as loud. Has anyone else had his problem?

    EdwardL

Yes, I have the exact car with the same problem. The closing the sunshade completely eliminates it, but that defeats the purpose of letting light into the cabin. I start to notice the wind noise around 55 mph. One thing you will find with the GS is that the road/engine/wind noise (from the side windows anyway) is so muted that you will pick up on every single other squeek, rattle, creak, rustle that gets masked by other cars.

let us know when your dash starts creaking and rattling like a 84 Chevy. most of them do
