  1. First off, P1133 is the code for the Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor (Bank 1 Sensor1). Bank 1 is the rear bank of cylinder, the three closest to the firewall and windshield. Sensor 1 is the one up high, between the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter. Is this the one you replaced?

Secondly, code P0125 is "Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Closed Loop Fuel Control" I would suspect a faulty coolant temperature sensor.

After the A/F sensor was replaced, did you at least have the codes reread to see if at least the P1133 code was rectified?

My check engine light and No Trac light came on today all at once -- at the same time. I need to take it to Advance Auto and get them to get codes on them.

Mine also is a '99 ES 300 by the way.

P1133 is the code that came up when Advance Auto did a scan for me. I had just a day or two before filled up with fuel and put Gumout injector cleaner with the fuel -- don't know if that is simply coincidence, but I wonder is there is any connection...

Car is running fine -- how quickly must this issue be addressed?

This is an update re. the two lights that came on. After running the car about 100 miles the two lights went off just as suddenly as they came on. Then the next time that I filled up with fuel, they came on again, only to go off again after about 100 miles of driving. Both times I filled the tank until the gas pump stopped, then squeezed in about a gallon more to top off the tank.

This is a real puzzle to me, but all the evidence (circumstantial, I admit) seems to point to the lights coming on somehow being related to filling the gas tank really full.

  4. I have an intermittent problem with my 93 LS400. The heat works great but occassionaly when I stop at a light or in traffic, cold air blows out the heater. Temp is at Max and it will go away after driving again after a few minutes. Anyone else run into this? Ideas?? Thanks

I have a 1990 LS400 that developed the same problem - baffled me for months. It turned out to be a defective radiator.

These are aluminum radiators and have extremely small passages that are easily clogged if you inadvertently use or top off

with the wrong (i.e. non-Toyota) coolant. Some of these passages had become clogged in my radiator and it had to be replaced.

A new radiator solved the problem and is has never recurred.

I have exactly this same heater hot/cold issue with my '97 LS400. Thanks for the suggestions -- I'll check things out and let you know what I find.

  5. one question: how do I find out if it has the adoptive variable suspension?

If it does, there is a switch right by the shifter to change the suspension mode to "Sport" etc. If you don't see that switch, you don't have variable suspension.

Thanks for the information. No such switch, so it looks as though that will make it cheaper when I replace the struts -- which evidently it needs.

One other question that someone might help me with -- is there anything I can look for that easily would tell me whether the 90K timing belt/water pump replacement has been done?

  6. Just purchased my first Lexus a couple of weeks ago -- 1997 LS 400 (had a little over 81,000 miles on it). Purchased it on e-Bay and actually had never even driven a Lexus. Great car! And this is a great resource for a Lexus novice such as myself -- thanks!

Re. the flashing cruise light -- the dealer where I bought the vehicle advertised a full tank of fuel with the purchase. The tank was only a quarter full when I picked it up, so he gave me cash to fill it up before I headed home with the car. Filled up, got up to speed on I-10 heading east from El Paso where the speed limit is 80 mph. Pushed the cruise button, light comes on and it holds speed for about 4 or 5 seconds then drops control of speed and cruise light begins to flash on on and off. Tried stopping the car, turning it off, and then setting the cruise again when I was back on the road. Same things happens. I'm thinking -- bought it "as is" and "as is" means the cruise isn't working right. Drove home w/o cruise.

Told a friend who used to be the service manager for a local car dealership about the problem and he said that he had seen his pick-up's cruise do the same thing when he pulled his camper trailer into a stiff wind -- his truck didn't have enough power to keep the cruise going. I went back to the Lexus manual and noticed that the LS 400 requires premium fuel -- and realized that I had put regular fuel in when I filled up in El Paso (as I said earlier, I had never driven a Lexus before). This made me wonder if the car was doing something similar to my friend's truck when it was underpowered.

My tank was half full of regular fuel, so I filled up with premium. Took the Lexus out for a spin on the open highway and tried the cruise. It worked perfectly and has ever since (with me using premium fuel now). My conclusion in the case of my vehicle is that it was underpowered running on regular fuel and that is the reason for the cruise problem.
