  1. "warming up" a modern engine is about the worst possible thing you can do to it.

Once the engine has oil pressure, which takes about 5 seconds, it's best to just drive it gently for a bit. Idling is bad m'kay?

dude are you serious? come on i usually turn the car on...wait a minute or so to find a song on my ipod i like...then head off and i haven't had a single engine problem.

and to the original post - just drive gently when its cold. works for me.

Absolutely serious. There's a long long thread over on Clublexus explaining why 'warming up' is horrible for the car if you want a lot more folks singing the same song. Enough time to find a song is a far cry from waiting 5+ minutes for the temp needle to move though, which is what most folks mean by 'warming up' the car.

I still think the thread over on CL is a joke and digging way too deep into the subject. As long as you maintain your vehcile and change you oil at regular intervals - warm-ups are just a personal preference or nessity depending on your location. Parade duty as it's know is a whole other subject or concern.

It is best to take it easy for the first 10 minutes or so of driving until the coolant gets up to temperature. If you start the car from cold and get right on the exressway, the transmission will stay in 5th gear and not shift into 6th until the coolant gets to temperature. It's part of the design of the car but I still take it easy until it can go into 6th and drop the RPM's.

  2. Just got my brembo blanks(front) in today. After work i came straight and got to it. After i would say an hour and a half in the washington rain i finished and went to test it. on the highway braking at 80mph to 60 mph there was a mass improvement. feel little to no shake. i can still feel a little shake while decelerating from about 80mph to 60mph but then its just me wanting to have the perfect car. first i thought it was just the brakes but when i let it decel i could still feel the shake so im asuming its not the brakes. im going to get an alignment tomorrow and see how that helps, looks like i need one to cause its eating away the inside off my front tires.

BTW you should have a clamp of some sort(i used a 3 inch C clap) if you are not able to manpower the pistons back (which i doupt u can do) in to fit the new/bigger rotor that you will be putting back into the brake pads. i had to run to NAPA to get it as bananags DIY didnt mention it. But then its almost commonsense to a tech rite? Another is make sure your brake fluid is not too full cause you mite push the pistons back to far and the fluid will explode out. didnt happened to me but i dont wanna come back and read it happened to someone that saw this post.

  3. Stain -

I lowered my 99 GS4, put some H&K coils on it, and put some Bilstein sport shocks on it. One of the best moves I did. I went from the standard 17" tires to the 18" with no problem. I do know a kat that did the same, only went to 19" tires. He required rotor / caliper suspension mods to get the rims and tires to fit. If you get the 20's to fit, would like to see a picture when you get it done. Good luck.......

If i lowered my GS4 would i have to get new cambers? about 1.9 front and 1.6 rear? Did you?

I had to get adjustable cambers when I lowered my integra. Just wondering.

  4. I was in the same position. I wanted a GS but 400s are hard to come by around my area and my budget was tight. I ended up buying a 2000 GS 400 with 139k miles (140k) for about $12,410 everything was about $16. If you just want a GS then get the 300. But if you want the GS and power then get the 400 way different. Just about the same gas mileage. I hear the 400 gets better mileage but then it’s the driver and were you drive it. You can always turbo the JZ motor (JZ=SUPRA MOTOR maybe a little different) in the 300, it’s a really good motor from what I hear. But if you want out of the box power go for the 400. Pulled on my buddy’s 07 TL Type S this past weekend =P. So I’m happy.

  5. How many miles do you have on your car....

My 400 with 140k blows a lot off white smoke at idle when warm up... after awhile it goes away but you can still noticed it a little when the engine warms up.

You mite want to try a heavier oil if your motor burns alot of oil, kinda like A GS300 said.

I haven’t owned my car long enough to tell if it blows white smoke at full throttle.

  6. The problem was likely starting before you changed the pads. The new pads are thicker and therefore have more mass to vibrate when the rotor is not perfect. This extra mass vibrating, will cause any variation to be more noticeable in the front end/steering wheel.

So you think the rotors may be a little warped? Any recommendations on aftermarket rotors? I am running DBA rotors w/factory pads on my Land Rover Disco and I am happy with those, seem to be an improvement over stock. I have been running the EBC rotors w/ greenstuff pads on my Scion xB's and haven't noticed much difference from stock.

    Thanks,

    Tim

I have warped rotors and just bought brembo blanks.....

When it arrives ill put it on and see.....

My steering wheel was shaking real bad when braking at high speeds and pads looked almost new(thick) so i bought rotors. Did a bit of research and looks like blanks will do for now. Will have a break in period but i would recommond the brembo blanks for everyday driving. THEY ARE BREMBOS...brand name you can trust.

Last year I changed my 96 LS 2dr integra with brembo blanks all around with hawks(not sure which) but they were perfect no problems yet....
