  1. Well, I discovered today (after taking my control panel out and checking for loose connections) that slamming the glove box makes the blower go off and on. My battery was dead on my ohmeter but once i get it going going to look harder at the blower control (the box the blower connects to). Need to look harder at the connections to the control module as well, but my son woke from his nap...so I put it all back together.

While I had the control panel out, I must have put a little more stress on my speaker problem, passenger front is worse now, more staticy and a little motor noise. Is the balance contol conection easy to get to? In the back of the stereo control I assume?

    Thanks again Gentlemen!!

  2. Recently I have been having a problem where my fan does not blow intermittently. It seems the only thing that changes it is turning the car off and on. Although I have never litterally sit there turning my car off and on, some days it works and some days it doesn't. I have tried turning the ac or heat off and on repeatedly and turning the fan speed up and down and that does NOT kick the blower on. But then I will go inside somewhere come back out,, start my car and it works....any advice o how to diagnose, common issues, etc would be appreaciated!!!

  3. 100% Agree with the use of Toyota T-4 Fluid only, Never add anything to your tranny except T-4 fluid, You would be asking for problems....................

I've seen a Castrol Import Transmission fluid at parts stores, it says it can be used on Lexus in place of type IV. Any opinions on the Castrol brand fluid? I'm using it for my power steering today....

  4. The computer issues were resolved in late 96 - early 97 models, so you're clear of that monster!

Who told you to add an additive? The dealership, or someone else? I would not introduce anything of the sort into your transmission!!!!! When was the last time you had your transmission fluid replaced? Was it with genuine Type 4 Toyota fluid? How about your transmission mount?

Mom and Pop shop recommended the additive, I didn't like the sound of it so I came here....Lucas is what most people say, but I'm still hesitant to put anything but tranny fluid in it...at around 110,000 mls I did the maintance at the dealership that includes fluid flush, new timing belt etc. the dealership said everything about the transmission checked out great. It seems my problem was improved with the new fluid (and I assume the Lexus delearship used correct fluid) but not eliminated. Over time it continue to get worse, but very very slowly....With my last oil change I decided to do the drain 2 qts and add new. My fluid was very dark almost purple in color. I plan to flush two more qts soon....

It assumed it would be more than a fluid issue just because it is as bad today (if not a little worse) as it was 2 yrs/40,000 mls ago before Lexus gave me new fluids and I thought tranny fluid lasted longer than that, or is thi sjust a bad assumption?

It's good to know I'm clear of the computer issue. Thanks!!! Here's my plan, I'll check my paperwork and call dealership to see if transmission mounts were inspected. If no, I'll look into that, not sure how difficult that is.... I read a post where it was recommended to turn OD off to see if the issue on the highway persist. I'll try that too.

I've heard replacing too much transmission fluid at once can shock a transmission...is that true with Lexus as well? If I want to do the routine where you drain two qts at a time, how often should I do it at the most? Every 500 miles too often? Or every 5000 mls?

Thanks again, will keep you posted!!! I love my 98 and don't have the cash on hand for a tranny so I want to do everything I can now to get 100,000 mls more out of it...I'm sure you understand!

  5. Doug, crucial question: Is it doing it when you take your foot off the gas, like it's jerking a bit? Say you're just cruising at that 45-50mph window, nothing aggressive, then you take your foot of the gas to coast....is it jerking then?

I have a 98 LS400, seems very similar...when I take my foot off the gas the rumble/shudder continues. Usually if I give it more gas it shifts and is smooth...been told I need to put an additive for shudder in but I'm nervous...150,000 mls. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Nick

  6. Ive been searching through old threads and couldnt find a problem like I'm having

I have a 92 LS400, and on the freeway , starting at about 70mph I can feel a weird rumbling/vibration in my car. The funny thing is, It will rumble for 3 seconds, and then go totally smooth for 2 seconds, then rumble again for 3 seconds, and then again go smooth for 2 seconds. It does this VERY consistantly, and will keep doing it at those speeds. Its most prominent between 75-80. Anything faster and you can feel it, but not as bad as when your at that speed. Anything under 65 and the car is silky smooth.

Also, anything faster than 80, it will rumble for rumble for 1 1/2 seconds, then go away for 1 second (the faster you go the shorter the rumbles). I cant really feel it when I'm coasting in Neutral, but as soon as I pop it back into drive it will do it again.

When Im at those speeds and put it in neutral, I watched the RPM needle and when its at idle, it idles smooth, no miss or RPM scavenging, and when Im in neutral, coasting at those speeds, if I rev it up to 2500-3000 (the rpm range it usually vibrates in) it still feels smooth, so it only rumbles in gear and above 70

Ive searched through many threads on here and no one has a problem like the one I have. Theyre rumble/vibration doesnt happen consistantly like mine. Most of the time their motormounts/transmission mount is bad. Could this be my problem too?

    Please advise, thankyou!

    Hi,

The same thing happened to my 92 LS400, I brought it to the transmission shop to check out the transmission mount, engine mount, everything seems to be fine, they could not find out what is wrong with it.

Finally, I changed the tires (my older set was Firestone), because it is about time, and the problem is GONE.

My suggestion to you is, balance the tires, or change them.

    Hope this help.

    Hat Be

Any updates by chance? My is a 98...but i've been told it is the tranny, recommended a lube for shuddering? any thoughts or know a good lube for shuddering?

  7. Hi All;

I've been searching the forums and this is the clsoest I've gotten. I apologize if this is not the right way to go about this, please let me know if you have any suggestions, I'm not sure where to start...

Here is my problem: I have a 98 LS400, 145,000 mls...I've had it for a few years and put about 35,000 mls on it...from the day I got it it has had only one problem...when it is cold ( I first start it) when it goes to shift (around 20-30mph i think) it will make a rumbling noise and it seems like it delays (rumbles for a few seconds) before it shifts. I also hear a similar rumbling noise when driving down the interstate around 60 mph but if i speed up it goes away (it shifts i think). I'm not real car savvy and was wondering if my issue could be the same one you mention here? I'm nervous that I may have tranny issues because I couldn't afford much right now.... and I LOVE this car...does this problem sound familiar or do you have any suggestions of where I should start for help? For the last year I have just made sure I let my car run and warm up for a few minutes beofer driving...I've aslo been told it may be related to the torque converter?

    Thanks for any help/suggestions,

    ~Nick :(
