  1. Codes 0441 and 0446 are the same thing - charcoal canister system. Since it has come back again, it is likely a leak in your vacuum lines or a vacuum switch or sensor. We have a '97 ES that occasionally throws a P0446. One time a Lexus dealer told me it would cost $500 to replace the charcoal canister. I declined the work, went home and consulted my Haynes manual. I found a vacuum hose that was unplugged and connecting it fixed the problem. The Haynes manual was the best $17 I've ever spent and I highly recommend one. Even if you're not going to do your own work, you can use it to understand what your mechanic is doing. The '97-'01 ES is notorious for throwing the canister codes.

Replace the purge solenoid on the charcoal canister. These are often inoperative from road water soaking into it.

I did it last month and everything is fine now. RockAuto online part # 430CP419. It cost about $50 shipped and I had it in two days of ordering. All you need to change it is a philips screwdriver. Be sure to note what hose goes where before you take the old one out.

  2. I have a 1999 ES300 (camry).

An irritating configuration of the engine controls is present.

When cold, the trans won't shift out of second or third until high rpm is present. 3000-4000 rpm.

Understandably it was designed in to get the cats heated. I don't like spinning a cold engine that fast especially in my climate that can be as cold as 15 below F. Letting the car sit and warm up to over 143 degrees F (the threshold to permit normal shifting) takes up to 25 minutes to attain the temp. A time and fuel waste! The alternative is to start it and drive at 15- 20 mph to keep the revs down until warmed.

What can be done to jump a sensor etc., to permit this thing to shift normally.

  3. So while driving the 99 es300 yesterday the VSC and check engine lights come on. I checked various vac lines and the gas cap and all seems in order.

I had it scanned at Advance Auto parts and the following codes were read.

    DTC codes

    P0441

Evap emissions Control System Purge flow Fault

    P0446

Evap emissions Control System Vent Circuit Malfunction

Help !! Any recommendations where to start looking?

    Thanks guys.

  4. I was going to start a thread on this cold shift issue but finding this one, others have the same concern. I just picked up a 99 ES300 with 48,000 miles

Not to add flame to the pedantic "it's easy to understand that it's your choice of ATF" *BLEEP* match of this thread but...

The choice of ATF has absolutely no bearing on how the thing shifts when cold. The determinate is that it is either programmed or temp sensor controlled to keep the revs high when cold. Once something senses over 150 odd degrees F, the trans shifts normally. The rev it when cold design criteria is most logically implemented to get heat into the cats.

Now, As I have the same issue, I really don't like that a cold engine, think below zero cold, is forced to run at 3-4000 rpm. Yes, I could let it warm up for 15 minutes but it's a waste of time and fuel. Being of this mentality I drove it slowly at a snails pace of 25 mph until it shifts out of second. Then a little faster until it hits fourth. Ok, my rant is over.

Does anyone know if the trans can be reprogrammed for normal at ops temperature? Is there a sensor that can be changed or cheated to get the thing to shift? That is the only possible remedy.

  5. I picked up a 99 ES300 with 46,000 miles. I have three questions for the gurus

When cold the trans holds third gear for quite a while. I imagine this is to get heat into the cats. But I have an aversion to running a cold engine at 3000-4000 rpm. Is there a trans or ecu flash that can eliminate this?

The premium sound system is pretty weak. What are recommended upgrades to get a better sound quality out of it.

Although only 46,000 miles on it is there a time lilit on replacing the cam belt? Scouring the site provided many ambiguous answers.

    thanks, sak

#1- The transmission has to heat up to 153 degrees to be in full operational mode.

#2- Check the settings on the headunit. What genre of music are you playing? If I may ask.

    #3- 90k

    Thanks DC.

    153 and 90K it is.

Music varies from rock to jazz. It just seems that there is no bottom or mids to the radio or CD. (kinda makes me wish I had the Bose system from my Maxima) Me wonders if different speakers will help or its just a matter of available horsepower from the head unit.

  7. When you buy this nice 99 with 46,000 on it.

Then you realize the premium sound system sounds like crap

You give your 5'7" neighbor a ride and he says its crampy for such an expensive car

You wish it had a limited slip diff instead of that insidious VSC

Then after a week I realize I wish my 92 maxima didn't have 296,000 on it.
