  1. Just bought a 95 SC400 with 220,ooo km. The engine will stall either right away or when I come to idle, if the a/c button or the climate control-off button is pushed while driving.

    What is the problem?

I had the same problem on my 95' SC400 a few years ago....If I turned the a/c off while driving the engine would stall. After searching this forum I found that the problem was a dirty throttle body. Cleaned the throttle body and solved this problem. Do a search here...there used to be instructions on cleaning the throttle body without damaging any sensors.

  2. Hi gang,

Great website. Incredibly useful info throughout. I am gettting ready to have a total paint job on my 93 SC400. I have a problem with the Door Window Molding Black Vertical Piece at the rear of the window. As with other SC's I have seen, with age the Black on these start to fail. Very expensive to replace with a new part as it is just the part you see of the entire one piece Outer Window Molding which runs about $700 per door.

Not sure what the finish on this vertical panel is. Looks like chrome under the finish, so I don't think painting it as an option. Anybody out there that has refinished these pieces? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

On my 95' SC I gave those trim pieces a light sanding with wet/dry sandpaper, masked off windows and body with newspaper and masking tape and spray painted with flat black engine paint....came out looking like new...cost $2.98 and a little time.

  3. The power steering was leaking on my 95' SC400 at the pump and at deteriorating hoses and fittings (160,000 miles all original parts). Had the local Toyota dealer do the repairs as I had neither the time or inclination to do this job.

New power steering pump, new high pressure hose, new return hose, re-manufactured rack and pinion, 4 wheel alignment $2782.64 w/tax.

  4. I had the same problem with my 95' SC400. The odor is eminating from the air conditioner evaporator.

Lexus published a technical service bulletin # AC001-97 On Sept 12, 1997. It details how to clean the evaporator. I took my car to the local Toyota dealer (closer than Lexus) and had the evap. cleaned for $65.00

this ended the odor problem for the time being but I think it will re-occur sometime down the road.

  5. I have 95' Sc400 and I'm having the strangest problem......... Can anyone please tell me why my car turns off when I turn off my A/C off. While the car is running I just push the A/C button and my car automatically turns off, its damm Weird! Any solutions would be much appreciated. I doubled checked my battery terminals to see if they were loose but everything thing looks ok. Has anyone had a similar problem like this?

I have a 95' that does the same thing. If I turn off the a/c while driving the engine dies. All lights stay on etc. I can shift to neutral and re-start and as long as I have my foot on the accelerator the engine will run but if I take my foot off of the gas the engine will die again. If I park and leave the engine off for a while the car runs ok without the a/c.

  6. I stopped by a Lexus dealer yesterday to arrange a service for my 230K mile 95 SC400. I felt like I needed to get a transmission fluid flush since I was feeling it a bit sluggish and since it was never done on my car. I usually drain and refill fluids at local auto shop every 30K miles or so. This time I wanted to do a full flush using genuine Toyota stuff at the dealer.

The service consultant however was not sure if I wanted to do that since the car has so much mileage and since he does not know the condition of the car.

He explained that with the full flush, things (debris) in the transmission will drain and it may not make the car drive better. It can make it worse he said and Lexus would not guarantee anything.

IS this a normal situation for a car of high mileage?

Please let me hear your advice on this.

I have had the transmission flushed on both Lexus that I own (1990 ES250 w/85,000 mi. and 1995 SC400 w/149,000 mi.) and saw a marked improvement in shifting in both cars. Both cars were done at a Toyota dealer who was close by, less, expensive than the lexus dealer & used Toyota transmission fluid.
