  1. I've seen a number of ways to handle this one but thought I would throw this out.  Would it be OK to simply drop the 2+ quarts via the pan plug, refill the same amount and then do this again 2 or 3 times to swap out perhaps half the trans fluid?  LS 460 has 55K miles so there should be little risk I would assume.  No leaks.  I've also seen via the trans cooling lines but that seems more challenging.

    Thanks!

  2. Just to add on. I drove vehicle last night and indeed the low beam headlights were pointed more upwards so I could better see the road ahead. So the annoying blinking AFS light is gone away and the low beam headlights actually light up the road. I’m glad to have this working properly now.

The only open question in my mind now is if the headlights are properly aligned and if I skipped a calibration step with the new sensor. If anyone knows if there is a special calibration step when you replace the axle height sensor, please chime in.

My light cooperated through the coldest months however the problem is back withthe warmer weather.....do you happen to have the part number or part name? Is there a way to isolate the problem or is this best left for the dealer?

    Thanks!

  3. Finally made it home...Turns out the right rear LH height control subassy burned up. causing the AFS OFF light to flash.. All charred on the inside.. Looks just like a potentiometer with an O ring around it.. Part is around $300...not under warranty..

You can substitute a 5 cent 1/4 watt resistor....

Check the shop/repair manual for the range of resistance for the leveling sensor and pick something in the middle to start. Then adjust the resistance empirically, trial and error, until the auto-leveling sequence settles at about the right, desired, height.

Hopefully you can help me. I have a 05 LS 430 with the same problem. The light will flash for minutes and then just go away. My guess is the problem is getting worse and the flashing light happens more frequently. Can anyone help to diagnose what the problem might be and if it is a module can I use a replaceemnt from any other lexus that has AFS?

  4. Does anyone have a subscription to a carfax vehicle history report?? Im trying to get the the history report on a '90 LS400 to see if it has a clear title. Please email me if you can. Thankyou

I can help you out. Give me the VIN and your email address. I bought a 30 day subscription, and only used it once haha. Ended up buying the first car I carfax'ed

Hondaspeed85 - I sennt you a Vin to check fo me. Please let me know if you did not receive this with my email address - thanks!

  5. Can anyone tell me which is Bank 1 when it comes to failure codes? Is this the engine or passenger side emissions related problems?

    Thanks!

Can anyone tell me which is Bank 1 when it comes to failure codes? Is this the engine or passenger side emissions related problems?

    Thanks!

Bank 1 is the drivers side sensor 2 is the sensor after the converter

    Thanks - appreciate the info!

  6. What do you hear instead of the station?

Is it a whining noise and does it change with the engine RPM's?

Actually I made too many changes. I replaced the antenna mast with an aftermarket one - from a truster Ebay source and replaced the head unit. This was ll do to the fact that I was having right channel drop outs for extended periods. Going back in time I had Lexus repair the head unit and amp and a year or so later the same problem came back. Through a bone yard I ordered a replacement Nalamachi head unit. With all said and done I'm not sure what is causing the problem. With the ignition on and the car running no problem with reception with the car running I loose the reception and I get some static. ANy noise I get does not vary by speed. I'm really at a loss on this one. Should I get an aftermarket antenna and plug it in to the head unit to see if that solves the problem?

    Thanks!

  7. Hi,

I have a 95 LS400 and with the hot weather I noticed that the LS takes a long time to cool the cabin - longer than I remember last year. Other than taking it into the shop $$ is there a sight glass on these that will help to tell if the freon is low? If so what is the procedure to use?

    Thanks - keep cool!

  8. I've got a 95LS400 and the CD changer is dead. If I were to find a replacement from another member or a local bone yard will there be any connectivity problems? The reason I'm asking is I called a bone yard that has a changer and they told me that more often than not on a direct replacement basis once it is plugged in an error code is displayed. DOes anyone have experience with this?

    THANKS!

You shouldn't have any problem. The only way your going to get a error is if there are issues with the replacement changer. So buy from a reputable source, Ebay is not the best for this.

    By the way, Wrong forum.

Try audio/video or ls forums next time.

Can you help me to find where it is at? I'm stumped. Thanks

The cd changer or a replacement ?

Sorry - the forum location where audio/video is discussed - thanks

  11. this is probably coming down the line for me....what sound and noise improvements did your aftermarket cat's make for your car? and where did you get them from?

    thanks

    I purchased (2) for $278 from :

    Import Specialists of America, Inc.

    990 Cedar Bridge Avenue

    Building B7 - Suite 221

    Brick, NJ 08723-4157

The exhaust is slightly louder however no change in performance. The package is almost identical in size. I really did not want it to behave much different than a LS should behave. Good luck!

  12. I too had to pull that tray out of my 95 when I installed a car phone. I used the same careful prying method as Jim to get the tray out. I can't remember if it is snaped in certain areas or all the way around (if I had to guess, I'd say it's snaped in certain areas.). I really think you would have to beat the hell out of that tray in order to break it. It should take you about 20 seconds to remove it, taking your time.

I'll give it a shot - thanks - kind of goofy driving around in my nice LS with the arm rest in the up position ...

  13. Thank you for the information srgilbert. I have a '96 with the same problem and I really would like to stop seeing the orange light.

    Thank you

I/,m so used to seeing the orange light that I thought it would burn out before I managed to solve the problem. It's odd tht the emission test passes with flying colors but the ECM finds a fault. Perhaps Toyota should have allowed some greater tollerance before the stupid light goes on...hope all of this helps.

  14. If you are talking about the lower tray that holds the phone, the insert tray can be popped out by using a stiff taped (to prevent damage) 1 or 1 1/2 inch putty knife - at least this is how I did it two days ago on my 00 LS when I had to remove the insert to install a missing tiny rubber "bumper" stop on the bottom of the tray.

Is the tray press fit around the edge or is there some type of press fit in specific areas that I should go after? Last thing I want to do is break it and have to take out a second mortgage to fix it.

    Thanks

  15. Just wanted to provide some future reference on this topic. I went ahead and purchased 2 aftermarket direct fit catalytic converters - total about $270 delivered and had a local shop put them on. I watched as the studs broke off while removing the frozen nuts....after drilling them out and replacing them the cats were on. About a 3 days later later the P0430 code came on which points to the post cat oxygen sensors. I purchased 2 Denso sensors (universal 4 wire) via Ebay and spliced them in as instructed. Actually this was much easier than pulling up the carpet in the cabin. I checked the resistence on the black wires and they were both 8 or so ohms which is above the standard. The sensors are in and the check engine light has been off for a week. I believe this one can now be considered completed.

The lesson I learned is that it is well worth your while to replace the oxygen sensors (all 4) before the converters unless there is an obvious problem.

  16. Hi,

I have a 95 LS400 with the useless cell phone in the arm rest. The arm rest has a sandwich layer which the cell phone is mounted in. Looks like the spring catch/latch has broken. I stopped over at Lexus and it looks like the piece is replaceable however I have no idea how to get to it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Without fixing this the arm rest remains up - not very Lexus like...

    Thanks

  17. Well it's time to send my cluster off to Jim Walker however I cannot figure how to get it out.  I took off the (2) bottom screws and the 95 unlike earlier years does not seem to have screws at the top to hold it in.  Can anyone help me to figure out what is holding it in?  I tried pulling on the tabs on the bottom (perhaps 4 of them) and no budge.

    Thanks

Alright sir. If you look closely on the top, you will see 2 small opening on the top of your dash, probebly enough for a flat head to go in. All you need to do (CAREFULLY) is to insert a flat head there, and press on the 2 pressure clips to release the cluster, and that is all. I had the same problem your facing, and had to put it back together and do it all over again after some help on the forum.

Just look carefully for those 2 spots, might have to pull on the trim above the cluster to see them. BECAREFUL not to bend thee trim TOO hard. Good luck.

THANKS! You were a huge help. It was a struggle - not sure how I will be able to get all the connectors back but it is out. I recommend taking off the steering wheel cover to get a bit more room.

    Thanks again

  18. I haven't had any check engine lights and no problems whatsoever. BUT..I have not driven the freeway for any length of time...which is when I would get a P0 code. After watching guys checking, swapping and replacing the 02's front and rear...and even replacing the cats and still getting the code....my thoughts are that this is and ECU glitch.

Since when the code is set there is no change in engine tune...I believe I will just ignore mine if it comes on again. And get out the electrical tape to cover the light.  And surely the code will appear again if I take a long highway cruise.

And mine just got through the smog test with flying colors....like it always does.

I would be it is the ECU but I am aware that the cats for 95 were weak - confirmed from several Lexus mechanics. WIth only 114K on the LS my guess this is part of the enture ECM fiasco for that year. Every once in a while the trans acts a bit funny on the 2/1 downshift but overall it is running better than under the old ECM. I'll let everyone know how the cat replacemetn goes. FOr $120 a piece with free delivery and direct bolt ons and warranty other than crawling under the car a bit I have little to loose. I do have the electrical tape ready.

  19. I have had this similar problem for two years and now still got the same head ache. I thought the technique of swapping O2 sensor is a brillion idea, and some of you had replaced the O2 sensors and I did replaced both cats but still have the same problem.

I thought sometimes it had to do with the gas that where you got. The last time, I drove 500 miles and Engine light is ON again, P0420 thredhold bank1. I had no idea what is this code for? CATs (I replaced both already), may be O2 Sensors, may be Gas, or leaks somewhere?

Second thought, I can think of  is may be leaks between manifold and engine. Sometimes I smell unburn fuel from underneath engine. Someone at Autozone to me to use a gas torge and had it on without and fires while keeps the engine running, this way, you can tell any leaks. If there are some leaks then you should see alot of sucking from that area, it's trying to draw all the gas in that leak.

Anyone here succesfully fix the problem? I am think getting rid of this car 147Kmiles 95' LS400

Can I ask what brand CAT you purchased?  I have DEC converters on order which are direct bolt ups.  Price is $120 each.  I guess if this doesn't solve the problem I'm getting out the black electrical tape and the light will be off.
