  1. I have a 2001 LS430 Ultra. the RH rear shock alway sets lower than the rest of the car by .5 to .75 inches. I've adjusted the height sensor to it max and it is still lower. When I engage the high RH rear is still lower than the rest of the car. Does this mean the height sensor is bad or is the airstrut weak. At $1000/strut I don't want to buy one if I don't have to. Does anyone have a spec on how much the suspension should raise when it is in the high position?

  2. When you hooked up your trailer lights did you have to use one of those modules that supplies power to the trailer lights or did you just splice into your tail lights.??

Here is a link to the official U.K. Lexus website which documents that a 2004 LS430 is rated to tow 2000 kg. - a whopping 4,410 pounds! -->

    http://www.lexus.co.uk/specification.php?m...a=specification

The U.S. LS is rated at towing only 2000 pounds without additional accessories like a transmission cooler. All three of my LS owners manuals (90, 94, 00) and our Camry manual contain identical disclaimers about how towing can increase wear, effect fuel mileage, etc. Similar disclaimers are in the owners manuals of many if not most cars and SUV's sold in the U.S.

My 2000 LS manual has 2 1/2 pages devoted to the subject of trailer towing. My 94 LS U.K./Euro spec manual goes so far as to provide extensive instructions on how to tow a trailer safely, how to calculate tongue weight, etc.

Maybe I have a different perspective because I have traveled extensively outside the U.S., am employed by a European (auto industry) company and know co-workers in other countries that drive Lexus LS cars. I also have 38 years of towing experience and for 11 years towed a 4 x 8 foot utiltity trailer and even a 2000 pound sailboat behind a 65 horsepower Mercedes diesel sedan without any problems. Last time I checked, that old '79 Mercedes diesel was still going strong at over 300,000 miles with its new owner - towing must not have hurt it much.

Take a look at this discussion of towbars on the UK Lexusownersclub website where you can find complaints that U.K. dealers are charging up to a 1,000 pounds to install a towing package on an LS430 -->

  3. Are you playing burned discs? I get the occasional digital pop/crackle when playing some CD's ripped off my PC. Could also be a loose cable or dust on the laser itself.

All the disc I played were purchased. It seems like dust because I can blast it with compressed air and it works OK for a while. Have you ever taken the player out of the dash? I would be easier to clean.

Clean the laser with a cd-rom cleaning disc, You might have to repeat the procedure 2-3 times. This should clear up your popping/static.

I tried a cleaning disc about 6 times. At first it helped but a few minutes after I started driving it started popping. I'm wondering if it lost a ground connection and is building up some static charge or if there is just a loose wire. Anybody ever take the CD player out of the glove box?

  5. On a road trip last week in my 95 LS 400, the CD player started making loud pops and cracks after about 5 hours of great playing. I've tried pressurized CO2 and vacuming the player with a straw. It will stop making the popping sounds for 1-5 minutes and then starts again. Any suggestions? Is it dirt or is it a loose wire? No problems playing the radio or tape player so its not the speakers.

  6. You could consider a magnetic ski rack like the one on this web page: http://www.rackattack.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?search=yes

I've never used one but a magnetic rack would prevent compressing and damaging the rubber door seals.

I've had several roof ski racks, including a Yakima that is still in my basement, and always thought the worst aspect was the wind noise - not bad for a few miles but awful to put up with when driving 675-800 miles (one-way!) to Colorado several times a year like we did.

If I ever go back to driving to Colorado instead of flying or going on a Kansas City Ski Club sleeper bus, I might try mounting a ski rack on a hitch mounted bike rack to see if I could literally put the noise behind me.

I always thought it was odd that a ski rack was available as an official accessory from Lexus dealers in the U.K. and Europe throughout the 1990's but never in the U.S.

I just recently learned of the magnetic racks. Have you actually seen one installed? Did you try to pull it off or slide it around? If it stays in place I think it would be a good idea.

  7. does anybody know of an LS 400 that can make it up the mountain? j/k

Depends what kind of mountain :) After all, you dont have to drive onto the top of a moutain to ski. You just get to the bottom of a mountain and take a ski lift. My 99LS gets around ski areas in Colorado just fine(winter tires are a must)

Cubby, Do you have a ski rack that fits your LS400?
