This appears to be a typical problem... The exact same thing happend to me at 98K on my 98GS4 and I had to get the starter replaced. The dealer asked for $800+, I got it done for a little less than $500 at a local shop.
SK will probably tell you this, because its true, if you do a search you should find tons of info.
Let me know if you want the number to my local guy.

Hey guys/gals,I've got a 98 GS400 with 52,5K miles on it. Recently it started acting weirdly when starting.
-Put key into ignition, and turn it
-All dashboard lights come on, CD player works, fan works
-I can hear a clicking noise when key is turned to the start position
-Car doesnt start
If i play around with the key (i.e take it out several times) or try to turn it to start position several times, the car will start eventually. Also, If i drive it frequently during the day it starts with no problems. If it sits in the parking lot for a while, then i get this problem.
I've tried replacing the battery on the key and got my car battery checked at a local AutoZone, both of those are ok.
The local dealer says the starter needs to be replaced and they want to charge me $1000 (parts + labor).
Does anybody have any suggestions or does anybody know how easy is it to replace a starter on a GS400 ?
Thanks in advance!

Thought many would find this very informative...Here is a C & D test of 11 of the most popular 'Street tires'. Enjoy! B)

Thanks for the advice, my goal is to maximize my car and get the most out of it. I was talking to a guy in the auto store and he was in the processed of getting his car "chipped out" and he said that I could get better performance if I did the same, which lead me to my research and question.

Unlike many of you, my knowledge of car mechanics is minimal at best. When I look under the hood its like chinese arithmatic. I've had my Green GS 400 for 4 years now and I love it. The only problem I've had has been a dying starter that had to be replaced for $500.00 6-mos ago. I thought about selling my car but there is not much out there that I can get for under $50K so I guess I'm in it for the long haul. Everything is factory and I just picked out some 18" Chrome wheels. Sorry for the monologue but I wanted to give some insight since this is my first post. Now on to my question, speed.
I would like to increase the speed of my car, where should I start? I've seen those $50-$100 modules on ebay guarnteing 45+HP. I know you can spend thosands I just want to start out slow. What will give me the most bang for the buck? Performance chips, modules, air intake, etc? I just need to know where to start.
Also, I live in Atlanta, reccomend any shops to do the work?

My buddy who works for Lexus and owns a new GS430 told me to reach out for wholesalehyperformance.com. They have several Turbo upgrade kits for the GS4.
