  1. Turns out it is possible to replace the shift knob without cutting the OD wires. You have to dismantle the old knob (cut off the leather cover, remove the rubber pads, take out the two screws holding the knob housing together). Then, carefully dismantle the OD switch (held together with clips). Remove the contact plate where the wires are attached (they are riveted on, so you can't just disconnect them). The contact plate can be threaded out of the knob housing, and then threaded into the new one. Reassemble the switch and put the rest if the OD button/shift button assemble in the new knob.

    Took about 30 minutes.
