  1. Great, thanks very much for responding, Filehorse.  Now, just yesterday, out of the blue, it started shifting properly.  This happened to me with my first Rx300.  I took it to transmission shops but they never could get it to fail, so they found nothing wrong.    Then of course, as soon as I get back into it, it fails again.  That really complicates things.  But the code then was the knock sensor, and one shop just knew that could cause it, from experience.  He fixed it.  Cost about $1100 because the intake or exhaust manifold, I forget which, has to be removed to replace the sensors.  I bet it's probably the same thing, but of course, I don't know for sure.  Thanks again.

  2. I had a 2000 RX300 and the knock sensor (s) went out and it wouldn't shift into fourth gear.  I had both sensors replaced and it worked fine.  However, I had already burned the transmission fluid when I didn't notice that it was still in third gear and I drove on the freeway for too long.  The transmission then failed.  Instead of spending $4 000 for a transmission rebuild, I got another Lexus Rx300, 2002 model.  Now Advance Auto parts read the check engine light and code p1730 comes up as rev sensor.  ???  What is that?  Does it also inhibit shifting into fourth?  Or does it actually mean Knock sensor?
