  1. Can anyone tell me how to remove the automatic shift knob. I tried searching and turned up nothing.

I tried to take off the shifter plate but the shift knob has to be removed first.

I had to do the same thing. Luckily I found a post somewhere that had pics.

You need to pull up the cover at the base where the are two screws holding the shift knob.

Here is the link on how to remove the shift knob. See the first few pictures:

  2. I noticed that the later models (Years) of our SC300/400 cars have an embedded Homelink module (Garage door opener) in the visor.

Lexus wants $240.00 plus for that visor. I did not want to pay that much.

So I found a set of RX300 visors on Ebay with an embeded homelink system.

I paid $25.00 shipped for them. Since They were not the right size for my car, I took the Homelink module out and put it into my SC400, driver's side visor. It works great. here is a picture. (I had to recover the visor and I took out the mirror. My girl friend is scandalized that the mirror is gone, but i never used it and she can use the passenger side visor.)

I tried to upload a picture, but it would not let me. I will post a picture elsewhere and put a link here

Here is wher you can see the visor:

    That is a brilliant work!

I wonder which year of SC400 starts having homelink feature included ? '98-'00 ?

  3. You are right about satelite radio, but we run out of real estate on the console. Where did you mount it, Tom ?

    V.

    FM reception is so 90's.

Step up and get linked to the satellites.

    ha ha ha

    Couldn't resist.

    Tom

I did an experience where I unplug the power supply to the antenna motor so that the antenna would go up or down anymore. Then I turn on the radio and the reception is still very good.

This solve the problem with the antenna mast issue as well.

I think the antenna mast is only for AM, depending on year. On my '92 I have it permanently retracted and the rear window FM antenna works fine. YMMV

  4. That won't happen. Like what you said, it is too much hassle.

BTW, Bridgestone Alenza ($150/=) is having buy 3 get 1 free sale (Firestone in Austin TX) right now, and Michelin MXV4 S8 is at $159/=. I'd prefer Michelin, but BS Alenza is OEM for Mecedes ML320 as well. Decision, decision, decision.

  5. Hi:

I own a 2004 RX330 with 47K miles on it, and it is time to change the OEM Goodyear tires with 4 new sets.

I've done some research for my tire size P235/55/R18, the camp is divided to Michelin Energy MXV4 S8 and Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza. Many tirerack.com reviews gear towards Bridgestone. Any opinions ?

Also, I found out that small wheel diameter (R17), gives me a better price $97 for Michelin Energy LX4, but it is S rating. What do I gain/lose changing from 18" to 17" ?

    BR,

    V.

  6. Anyone has any luck with 17" tires ? Price goes down to $97 for Michelin Energy LX4, but it is S rating.

I am still debating to go with either Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza or Michelin Energy MXV4 S8. It seems like from tirerack.com reviews many preferrred Bridgestone. But I am little hesitate with Firestone/Bridgestone products. Any thoughts ?

  7. Hi All:

I took my '04 RX330 to the dealership for warranty repair for the humming noise during driving at low speed, a mechanic actually test drove together with me.

He found 1 problem with the A/C compressor with the engine block mount issue (from what I understand) that Lexus is working on TSB per his feedback.

But this will not take care of the rest of the humming noise. He told me it is the structure of this model year and the later model fixed the problem.

What can I do at this point, live with the humming noise for the rest of the life of the car ? It seems like my older '99 RX300 is quieter than this new one. Even my '93 Lexus LS400 beats the noise too.

    Sigh...

It's probably the spiral wiring inside the column.

Sometimes it takes replacing it to fix it.

Our rx300 has sort of a rubbing sound at some spots when turing the wheel. Not that much of an agrivation, just noticable. Is this related?

  9. Once my wife and I bought a brand new Mecerdes C280 (back in '97) and sold in within a year due to overall bad experience from quality of the car to inconsistency of service from the dealership (differ from city to city - moved from DFW to Austin, TX)

Lost about 10K, and bought an RX300 in 1998, drove for 7 years without any safety issues, now on the second gen. Rx330.

I would never never buy a MB in my life again, no matter how sexy it looks.

    V.

Yet another example of why it's very important to do your research thoroughly every single time before you purchase any vehicle.  Making the wrong decision means you'll become unhappy with your choice quickly, and ALL quick-escape trades of almost-new vehicles result in the owner taking a nasty financial bath on depreciation and resale value regardless of how they may try to make it sound as if the salesperson was doing them a favor and giving them a great deal.  Some people trade cars like schoolkids trade lunchbox contents (one right here on this forum but I think he's learning that this habit is extremely costly).  Do this and you'll get your wallet significantly lightened every single time.

Remember that vehicles are NOT investments.  They are expenses, and they begin to significantly lose their value as soon as you drive them off the lot.  Do your homework and make sure that your vehicle purchases are the right choice for you and that you can live with them for years to come.

  10. I've got my ECM reprogramed as well 2004 RX330. Now the hesitation issue is goone.

I had the same issue in my 330.  I told them what I read here and they fixed it.  Here is what my invoice reads:

A CUSTOMER STATES THERE IS A HESITATION WHEN ACCEL

CAUSE: 29/99 HESITATION WHEN ACCEL TSIB TC005-03 BULLETIN APPLIED

TC3001 RECALIBRATION ECM ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

    Much better.  Thanks everyone.

  11. Hi Warriors:

I have this strange thing happened to me last night.

    '93 LS400.

As I drove home and park my car in the garage. I couldn't take out my Lexus key in the ignition! I tried several things:

    - move the transmission stick down 'L' and to 'P' again.

    - start the car and turn off again

    - drive the car aruond the block and back home, turn it off again.

Finally I disconnect my battery terminal and I can pull the key out. This is interesting.

What is really amazing is that the next morning when I drove to work everything is back to normal again.

Has anyone had such a experience before ??

    BR,

    V.

  12. I experienced the same problem, the tachometer and speedometer stay at zero (until you tap on it) when weather is hot.

I don't know why a rap is helpful, does it send a electric jolt to the device or loosen the needles a little bit or provides a 'start up' energy to move the needles ?

Anyone has a fix on this problem ? Pls share your experience.

    BR,

    V.

This problem, and it usually involves the tachometer and speedometer, is apparently not related to the common problem of the dash display not lighting when the weather is cool.

I think you will find that the needles' failure to move will occur when the weather is hot.

As Lovelex stated, a rap on the top of the dash usually brings the needles to life.  Sometimes, it takes more than one rap.

  13. Jim Walker fixed my board on the fuel guage and backlighting.

But I still have problems with the rpm gauge and speedometer. Jim told me that he is too busy to investigate the root cause of the problem. I wonder if anyone have a solution for that ?

  14. Hi All:

In lieu of the rising price of the gasoline, I talked briefly to my mechanic regarding fuel economy. He told me that replacing the oxygen sensors will improves the mpg dramatically. Is that true ?

Also, how many sensor total do we have on a 93 LS400, 2 or 4 ?

Thanks in advance for you imformation,

    V.

  15. Hi All:

I own at '99 RX300 and every time when I start the engine, I heard noises coming from the console area. At first I thought it was the in dash CD changer, then I took out the CD magazine, the noise still exists. It is from the center console!

I wonder if anyone experienced the same problem. It is not major but annoying....

BTW, it didn't happen during the morning when it is cooler/colder.

    BR,

    V.
