  1. Well, " Duh" is all I can say for the above post! I apologized to the 66 viewers that read my above post. Obviously I was not aware that there is such thing as a universal rubber oil plug! My bad! We had his 98 LS successfully oil changed and found the following. The thread on the oil pan side was so stripped that the oversize self tapping drain plug would not work anymore. We decided on going ahead and use a new rubber oil plug. We will just shop around for a new oil pan ( maybe from Sewell) and gasket for the next oil change.

Well I learned something new today.....

  2. I have a friend who was so impressed with my LS so three weeks ago, he bought himself a relatively clen 98 LS with 168k miles on it. He just called me this p.m. and said he was having an oil change when his regular service guy informed him that he got a rubber oil drain plug and suspects his oil pan drain is stripped, thus the rubber plug. I haven't change the oil on my LS yet so I have no idea what to tell him. I've informed him that there are "self threading" oil drain plug in the market to remedy the situation if that is so.. Was I right in my advice to my friend. BTW, for those in the know, what size is the oil drain plug on the LS??

I dont believe he needs a new oil pan or does he?

    Thanks again!

  3. Im not familiar with your car but I had similar issues with another car earlier this year. Turned out to be the A/C condensation drain was unplugged/blocked and dripping into the front floor. Keep your fingers crossed and hope it's not the heater core leaking... Good luck. Im sure there are other RX owners that can share their thought..

  4. Thanks for the reply. As I mentioned he claims his wife bought it and did not know what a salvage title is. He called off meeting this p.m. due to tight schedule ( Father's Day surprise). We are planning to meet tomorrow. He's an immigrant from Asia ( so am I ) but his accent is so thick and english hard to understand. He said he is a mechanic ( that's the one that scares me..LOL).I dont think it has service records he will say he takes care of maintenance.Looking at the picture of the dashboard, I thought it was the airbag light that was on. Will know more when and if I see the car..

Gut feel ?? Car was totalled by the insurance company and was rebuilt in an inexpensive way.Might need a bodyshop inspection and of course Lexus prebuy inspection. Dont know how much that would cost. Can't figure out the super low mileage though... Can't think of a possible scenario for that to happen. Can something be disconnected to prevent the odometer from working with compromising the car's operation?? Anyway the more I think about it, beginning to look like a waste of time...but..LOL!

Will definetely update you if I get to see/drive the car.

    Thanks again.

  5. Topic says it all. This will be for my daughter. Ever since I got the LS 2 months ago, she has been wanting to get one and we found this @ CL.

Current owner said his wife bought it 3 or 4 yrs ago and he did not realize it has a Salvage Title until they bought a new family van and was trading/selling the GS. It's got 80k unbelievable for the age.Seller said he is a mechanic .... hmmm red flag? Anyway, price is right and gonna check it up this afternoon. Would appreciate inputs and Happy Father's Day to all father's out there..

  6. Well, I've got a 2000 Mitsu Gallant as a daily driver. it is serving me well with 125k on the odometer.I dont think I will miss them in the U.S. market. Parts I think would still be available. I am originally from the Philippines and Mitsu products are well respected there for their realibility and lower costs compared to Toyota, Honda and Nissan. Just like here Mitsu is being choked out of the market by their Korean counterparts ... I guess it's survival of the fittest..

I also used to be a big Volvo Guy. Used to own 7 Volvo 240s..LOL. One for me, one for the wife and one each for my five kids! They all learned to drive in Volvo 240! Needless to say, I have spent many hours in junkyards pulling out relays, misc parts, ECUs and yes wiring harnesses!I lost interest in them when the FWD models replaced my beloved RWDs. Then Ford bought them out and that's when I stopped looking at those cars.My last Volvo was a 97 940 Turbo. Loved that car but I cant refused the trade for a 3carat solitaire diamond ring, rather my wife can't resist!LOL! Now Im retired and enjoying my 99LS and I wont be surprised if I end up with another Lexus.. Thinking of a GS????LoL! Not a bad move from Volvos to Lexus..

  7. Anyway as stated in the subject, I am intermittently getting this message but all the lights are working. I have checked and double checked but can't find a malfunctioning bulb. Any ideas/suggestions. The warning message disappears after awhile. If I turn the ignition off the failure message goes away. Also noticed it appears when my foot is on the brake pedal.

Thanks is advance for your reply.

  8. Paul,

For the records and to keep accurate infomarmation specially for newbie you are absolutely correct and thanks for bringing it up. I"ve been driving the 99 LS yesterday and yes Im averaging 25-26mpg on the freeways straight and level @ 65mph.. City driving stop and go takes me anyhwere for 14mpg to 17mpg. I will get an accurate/actual mpg on my next fill up.
