  1. I use the FULL synthetic (not dino) walmart brand. How can that be worse than the conventional oil that many use in their RX all the time? How could it hurt since this 5-10 years ago this would have been a good thing to do to my RX if it were available in Walmart brand?

Since many here use conventional oil in their lexus, even WalMart brand FULL synthetic should be better than regular Penzoil.

  2. I eat salesman up like a shark. I drive anything I want for free, waste their whole afternoon, sit at the desk, shake hands, go to the finance guy and crap all over them until I got the manager and 3 other guys in the office and feed them the same bull they are giving me, playing all kinds of games with them and walk out with nothing because I dont like the deal. I feel sorry for the sap that comes out like he's a wheeler dealer and hunts me down on the lot because he's just going to get chewed up and spit out. I am there just to look but they dont take that for an answer.

My wife hates going with me as she feels sorry for the salesperson.

Now they leave me alone when I come to look.

  3. While keeping your vehicle tuned up and running clean fluids will always help to prolong its lifespan by allowing it to operate more efficiently, I feel that there is little one can do to improve the transmission performance and acceleration of the RX300 series.  Keep in mind that the RX300 is overweight and underpowered.  Throw in a weak and somewhat suspect transmission (particularly in the AWD models) and you have a recipe for sluggishness and rough shift points that simply aren't going to respond to general tune-up efforts.  I ensure that my wife's RX300 is meticulously maintained, but it continues to shift more like a $12,000 vehicle than one that originally stickered at $40,000 or so.  You can bet that we'll never purchase another one.

It does make operational and economic sense to keep your RX running with clean and proper parts and fluids, but unfortunately that will not alleviate the dissatisfaction you have with your transmission.  If there was a way, I would have already found it and would be touting it here on this forum.  All RX300 owners certainly deserve a cure for their lousy transmissions but short of a recall and a design replacement it's not going to happen.

Thanks and well said. I feel better now. I might buy a 4.4 v-8 X5.

  4. I used to love my RX, now I just hate it except for when I am parked with the engine off in my driveway.

I test drove an IS and now my RX tranny feels so DOGGGGGGGY. I never realized how much other vehicles roll so nice and accelerate quickly without much effort. I cant stand the RX now. The tranny feels like its braking all the time. I have maintained it very well. (Especially the tranny).

I think I will diconnect the neg. batt. terminal every nite so I can get a reset after my wife drives it. What a pain.

Any suggestions or fixes? :chairshot: :censored: :( :cries:

  5. In my area ethanol blend is cheapest and a little higher octane than regular.

Has anyone heard wether ethanol is good or bad for the RX?

One dealer told me that its good in colder climates but not in warmer times of the year because your engine will run hotter. I dont know.

  6. I have read many posts on flushing Lexus cars cooling systems, but not the RX300.

What is the usual method of flushing on the RX.

Where are the drain bolts on the block?

How do you get to them or is this a dealer issue or should I just drain and fill.?

    Thanks ahead.

  7. i only placed 33,289 miles on my 2000 RX300 before i got rid of it. but it was a FWD though, not an AWD

The front wheel drive transmission don't seem to be as bad. Although i have heard of them to go out early.

2001 AWD 78,000 Not one problem!

Do you know where your drain plugs for the coolant are on your engine block?

If you find out let me know how to get to em. Thanks

  8. What is your experience level in automotive maintenance and repairs?

All quantities are listed in the owners manual at the back of it.

I have done flushing and just drain and fill in many of my american cars.

Also changed the plugs in my RX but dont have a repair manual for locating some things as others are common sense. Some capacities are not always the same as the manual. Usually do all my own maintenance and repairs except tire replacement, tranny flush, and some timing belts.

  9. How do you flush the cooling system?

Where are the block drain plugs?

How much is in the block if I just drain and fill?

    How do you drain it?

Should I use pink or red?

    Full strength or 50/50?

    How much should I buy?

    How much does it hold?

    Should I replace the thermostat?

    Thanks

  10. I am looking for a good quality license plate cover without advertising for anyone, even Lexus.

Some are metal and dont crack but scratched my rear lift gate.

Plastic ones crack, are cheap looking.

Which brand ar where can I get a good set for my RX, or which has what do most put on their lexus/

    Thanks :)

  11. I already did do a search and it was a failure.

    Nothing for the RX300.

    Nothing under spark helped me.

    Nothing under plug helped me.

    Nothing under removal helped me.

    Nothing under tutorials helped me.

I did the research. I tried. Nothing specific. :chairshot:

  12. How do I remove the back 3 spark plugs under the intake manifold on my '01 rx300?

Do I really need to take all the intake stuff off?

I bought it with 54000 miles on it and it now has 74000.

The service dept. @ the Lexus dealer will not tell me what they did on the vehicle to certify it.

I think they want me to come in for the 60000 service, but if they did a certify then why would I bring it in for the 60k?

They will not even tell me if they replaced the plugs or not.

    :( <_<

I've tried evey way to get it out of them, asking to speak to different service people.
