  1. Hello

I just bought a 2001 GS 430. It has 134K miles on it. It came with few problems. One of the problems is that car hesitates to move from stopped position or for that matter whenever you hit the accelerator it ignores first 20% of the accelerator, then it starts with a jerk. I asked the dealer today and they say it is an expected behavior. It seems transmission has intelligence built in to it to adjust to driver’s driving style. They asked me to use it for some time for it to set to my driving style.

I was enquiring about the accelerator pedal replacement and gad additive like Chevron Techron Concentrate as mentioned in this forum under some topic. They say none of them are necessary.

I hope it works out soon.

Also, are the part sold by parts.com genuine OEM?

    Thanks

Had a similar problem with my 99 GS300. Disconnect the battery for 10-15 minutes to reset the memory and see what happens.

  2. The clunk you describe would certainly have me worried. Is your "shop" Lexus? If not maybe you should take your car in to the experts & put an end to the guesswork.

No it is not a dealership it is a local transmission shop. The dealership said they wouldn't do any work on any internal parts that they would just replace the thing and the cost is much higher than having it done elsewhere.

  3. Hello. I'm brand new to this board. Just bought a '98 GS300 from a friend.

I had a random "won't start" issue as well. Last weekend, I dropped a new battery in it, and also replaced the ignition relay (about $6.99). Still would start sometimes, but other times not.

My friend is a mechanic. He and I went to his shop and did an electric and ignition check on it. Everything was fine - except what he suspected, was the solenoid in the starter had worn out. Sure enough - 15 minutes to drop the starter, another 15 minutes to open the solenoid and replace the brass contacts, and another 15 minutes to reinstall. Starts every time now.

Now, what I am noticing on mine, is that it has to turn over for like 2-3 seconds before it starts. Any ideas why it takes so long to turn over?

    Thanks!

I had a similar issue with my 99 GS300. I would hear the solenoid firing every time I turned the key to start but it would take 5-10 tries for the starter to actually turn. When it did turn over the car started immediately. I replaced the starter and now it cranks for 2-3 seconds before it fires up. Does start every time now though.

  4. Looking for some advice here as I have a problem I haven't been able to find anyone else having in the last couple weeks of looking. I have had my car to the shop for this problem and they reattached a loose transmission ground and thought that might have solved my problems, but they are back. I am about to execute on a rebuild/replacement if I don't get any other ideas here. Occasionally my 1999 will not shift into 5th gear. When this happens the car will keep accelerating normally up to sometimes 5000 rpms before it finally drops into 5th gear. If I flip the level over to 4 while this as happening there is no change in rpms, but as soon as I switch it back to D it will shift up into 5th gear immediately. Additionally after the first time this happens in the day I develop a clunk when I am coming to a stop. It always happens at right around 12mph and is sometimes hardly noticeable (just a click like a solenoid firing) and sometimes quite jarring and actually able to be felt through the whole vehicle. It seems to be generated right underneath the shifter focused more toward the passenger side of the car. This clunking sensation will not occur if I place the car in 4 while stopping. If in 4 downshifts are as smooth as glass. The only acceleration problem I notice is the problem with 5th and the occasional "slipping sensation" many people experience with this car when accelerating from a near complete stop. If I am starting from a dead stop I never have an issue unless the car decides it doesn't want to find 5th. No slipping, jerking, hard shifts or otherwise. I am coming to my wits end but would rather not spend 3000 dollars if it is being done unnecessarily! Please Help!
