  1. Hey guys, just picked up my '06 GS430 on Friday.  I was wondering if anyone has direct wired a radar detector yet?  If so, any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I was going to but I ended up using the battery powered Escort Solo S2. It works great and the battery last about 2 months. I have a Passport 8500 hardwired on my Porsche and I can't honestly detect any difference between that and the battery powered one.

  2. Just to clarify, I was referring to "contemporary" BMWs. I have had a few myself, although older 10+ years or more. They (BMWs) were very good cars. Even so, they liked to spend their weekends on the lift with small issues being tended to. I've also had Infinities with no problems worth mentioning.

On a side note: Last Wednesday a friend of mine (against my suggestion) took delivery of his '05 BMW Z4. He called me yesterday to ask me if I knew why the driver's side window would not close. I told him, "welcome to 2005 German engineering." You see yesterday was Saturday, the day I eluded to earlier as being the day BMW's like to go up on the lift. I'm still laughing at his expense.

Is the Z4 supposed to be fast? Just wondering. A couple of weeks ago on a Sunday evening I happened to be entering the freeway behind a brand new Z4. The guy was obviously enjoying his new bimmer, he had been !Removed! around quite a bit all the way down the street. We pulled onto the freeway on ramp, he stood on it so I, even though I know better, did the same in my 430. I charged right up on his bumper, backed off, stood on it again and once more pulled right up on him. My GS430 being clearly faster. When we got onto the freeway, I pulled up next to him. He looked over my car with a clearly shocked look on his face, shook his head no, never exceeded the speed limit.

The Z4s are fun cars to drive being lite and small but I wouldn't consider them fast at least not in the same context as a Porsche Carrera. On the subject of reliability, our GX-470 though has been quite a disappointment. The drive shaft had to be completely replaced twice, the front turn signals suffers from primature failure. Both side has been replaced twice in two years and it suffers from many minor but irrittating faults. On the other hand our BMW X5 has been trouble free since we got it almost 3 years ago. Not a single issue.

I've had the 2006 GS300 for two months now and the more I drove the more I love it. It's very quiet, relaxing and has more than adequare power. After a stressful day at work, I really look forward to just a smooth relaxing drive home and the GS just fills the bill nicely.

  3. i recently purchased a 2006 gs 430.  while they are safety precautions, they tend to become a bit annoying.  some examples:

if you are watching a dvd, when the car comes out of park, the video dissappears

several buttons on the touch screen become inoperable while the car is in motion

does anyone know how to disable these features?  its great they care about my safety, but i payed 55K for a car that i control, not a nanny.

Lexus of Valencia can refer you to someone who can disable the DVD safety feature. Just be aware that you can be found liable in the event of an accident. There is a case in LA where the owner bypassed these controls and got into an accident. He was found liable and his insurance company refused to pay because of this.

  4. I just purchased the new GS300.  Does anyone know if the cd/dvd player will play mp3s recorded on a cd?  Before I burn a bunch of my songs into mp3 format, I wanted to know if this would work.

    Jim

Just tried playing some MP3 CDs, no luck. It doesn't play them. The unit can play Cds, DVDs and VCDs but not MP3. Doesn't make sense.

  5. Sorry no.  Plus it is a CD.  The only OEM DVD reader on board is the one for the Nav (if yours come with Nav).

If you mean the unit that plays the Nav DVD, no that's not correct. The Nav DVD player is separate from the CD/DVD changer. The Nav player is in the glove compartment. The 6 disc changer plays both CDs and DVDs.

I will test later tonight if the changer plays MP3s.

  6. I got my 2006 GS 300 for just under $51K. The only option not included where the AWD and 18" wheels. While waiting to take delivery the dealer sold 6 more. The car is very well so the dealer may not give up as much in this early stage of the car introduction.

I'm looking at the 2006 GS 300, with the following:

    1) moon roof

    2) wheel locks

    3) floor mats

    4) no NAV, no upgraded sound, no backup camera

What is the best "out of the door" price, before tax, that the dealer is offering you?  Thanks.

  7. well, so far so good.:whistles:  (like the first 2 tries). It's just line #8 that bugs me.:chairshot:

I had the same driveshaft replacement fix done on our 03 and it lasted approximately 5 weeks then the clunk was back. So far Lexus has no permanent fix for it (as per Valencia Lexus).

A friend who has a '02 Land Cruiser tell me it's normal at least on all the LCs he has owned. Good thing my wife only puts 300 miles amonth on it and it really doesn't bother her that much.

  8. I've had my new GX for a few wseeks now and it is the smoothest ride ever. A few small gliches and wondering if anyone else experiences them.  The seat warmer never gets beyond warm.  The dealer says it is designed that way to prevent damage tot he seat, but the RX 300 I traded in would cook on a cold day.  Anyone have any thoughts on this?

    Thanks.

Sounds normal. Mine just gets warm, never hot but then I live in Southern California, anytime the temps drops below 70 is cold. So my perceptions are skewed. LOL

  9. I completely agree with your statements - GS400jon. Any SUV feels likE a truck at times but the GX-470 is I believe oneof the best one at least in terms of smoothness on paved roads. That why I prefer driving our GX470 for long distance trips over my X5 though the X5 I believe is probably the best handling, balanced SUV in the market. For short trips, I love it. Long trips though, my kidneys can only take so much. lol. Take care!
