  1. All the doors should lock with one press of the lock button. Two quick unlocks for all 4 doors (sometimes more, I press it 4 or more times, no wonder mine doesn't want to work now) and the trunk you have to hold the button down until it pops open, takes a few seconds assuming that it isn't locked.

Is there a difference between a master and a secondary remote for that car model? I would look up the key options and make sure that you have a master key. You will need a real master and best to make sure you have one before something dumb happens (been there too).

I have a similar situation: on my 98 MKIV the battery in one of the 2 master keys, died. I replaced and now it only locks the doors and starts the engine (full functions before the battery change). The 2nd master key works fine, full functions but its casing is dying and the battery was replaced at the same time as the 1st key (last year). I'd be grateful for any suggestions and/or thoughts. Thank you.

  2. Ok so here is the deal I have a 2000 LS400 and when I lock the doors {and they do lock} the marker lights flash but I don't get a "beep-beep" from the horn? Is it the same horn as the main horn because that works. What do I need to check? Also the seat memory dosn't work, key in run car not running hold # button and "set" until it beeps, well it never beeps. Everything else works, these are the only 2 things that don't. I have had the battery die a few times because of a bad alternator and a bad battery, both have since been replaced. Before it started having starting/charging/battery issues both of these functions worked. Help!

The "beep-beep" when locking the car with the remote can be turned on/off so I would guess it's off. Not sure if you have a button to turn it on/off or needs to be reset by Lexus. Mine has always been off and I am happier with it that way. The seat memory I know nothing about.

    Best wishes

  3. If memory serves, and this is all based on previous readings, when the brake pads are worn out the electrical connection between the sensor and the warning light is severed triggering the warning light and so the solution is to replace the sensor/s which come with the appropriate wiring. This is something ideally done at the point where the pads are replaced. (for future reference, if possible, it is obviously cheaper not to let the pads get that low - I changed mine when only 10% was left on the pads and the sensors were still intact and did not require replacement). I do not know whether it is economical to replace the sensors - the sensor for my windshield wiper fluid went recently and Lexus informed me that the new sensor would cost £200 (British pounds) - at that price I enjoy looking at the low windshield wiper fluid warning light! As for the brake pads light - do you really need it? Here, in the UK, every time I take the car into Lexus or other garage they automatically inform me as to the condition of the brake pads!

    All the best

  4. Who cares if an engine is vvt or not ... do the proper tb service on time and leave the guessing and headaches to the yokels.:chairshot: The satisfaction of squeezing a few extra miles out of a belt disappears quickly when you're looking at bent valve stems and punctured pistons or at the least becoming a Nowhere Man needing a tow.

You can read up some other posts on belts and interference:

Agree with you entirely but I am trying to establish exactly what/when "proper tb service on time" is. On mine the tb was replaced (by Lexus) at 64K mls (in 2004), the car is now at 90K mls and the dealer is telling me that it should be replaced at the 100K mls service whereas the maintenance book says every 60K which would suggest 120K not 100K! The maintenance book makes no mention of time. Some confusion then, and, of course, the Lexus price here, in the U.K., just for changing the tb converts into U.S.$821! Naturally the engine would be just a tad more...

  5. I have a 97 and just changed it last year at 110K last year. I got the old belt. It is in perfect condition. I just see a local mechanic that I have used for years. He told me that the Lexus belt is very big and beefy. It is. He has changed them on cars with the orig at 150k and they were fine. He alos said that this motor would not be damaged it the belt did break. I might add it to the list of things to do at some point, but I would not worry about it. Just shop long for the best deal to change it. I did not change mine, but it does not look hard, it just needs to be done by someone you trust.

I believe the non-interference engine was only the mkI & II not the mkIII ('95-'97)

I have a 1998 MkIV also and would love to know the answer. I think the MKIV is an interference engine and my maintenance book says 60Kmls but there is no mention of time. The car is now at 90K mls and the belt was done (by Lexus) at 64Kmls (in 2004) The Lexus dealer tells me that it should be done again at the 100K mls service because it's been 5 years already. Opinion on the UK LOC is split with someone who has a letter from a Lexus dealer stating it should be done at 100K mls (and no mention of time) and others with different views.

  6. What you mean by a "skid"? Are you losing control? Unlike LS400's with traction control from earlier model years, traction control on a 98-00 LS400 allows unlimited wheel spin as long as the car remains pointed in the direction the steering wheel is pointed. The VSC (stability control system) will cut the throttle and selectively apply brakes if the VSC system senses that the car is not going in the the direction the driver intended. You will hear a "beep ... beep" sound when VSC intervenes and a warning light on the dash will flash -- it's all explained in the owners manual.

Sometimes when streets are wet or especially "greasy", I put the transmission mode selector in Snow mode while taking off from a stop and then put it back into normal mode when underway.

Of course, check the tires to verify they have adequate tread.

Thank you for the info - I was equally surprised to have this experience but at least now I understand why. The tires are ok and I thought the VSC should have dealt with it - am still waiting for the owner's manual.
