Well, you have to remember the general purpose of forums like this though, which are to discuss problems and compare solutions from other owners. Your question also depends on what year of car you're talking about too. We, being the members on here, are going to be useless to you if we don't know what year and mileage area you're talking about...
I have a '90 LS 400 with over 200,000 and counting. No model selected yet but looking at a '96 LS 400 with around 100,000 on it excellent condition for under 10K.

I've been considering the purchase of a mid 90's Lexus for my wife and from the posts on this board I'm beginning to wonder if I'd just be buying a big repair and maintenance bill. The one I have was purchased from a relative and I knew the car, it's been great and has none of the issues noted on this forum. Is my vehicle an exception or was I just lucky in getting a good car? I simply can't afford a new Lexus or I'd surely buy one.

Unlike vast majority of the people here on LOC my LS400 was very rundown. Although the engine and transmission were strong, everything else on the car failed or was beginning to fail. It was just not worth the hassle and money to fix everything on that car. I work 60hrs/week and I needed a reliable vehicle. For a single recent college graduate, the LS was a huge car so that’s why I went for a fuel efficient Civic over an Accord.
The Honda's a great choice, I have a '99 Accord that has a lot of miles on it and many more to go. It doesn't shine as it did ten years ago but it's as reliable as any car can be. No repairs beyond routine maintenance since new. One can't go wrong with a Honda.

I think that the coolant pump in the Lex is where most Japanese engine coolant pumps are, on the engine block behind the timing belt. Someone else might know for sure. If that's where it is the timing belt should also be changed while its out for the pump replacement unless it was very recently changed.
