1994 Es300 Cranks Then Dies

Hello all, new to the forum. I'm helping my brother work on his 1994 ES300. It cranks then dies after 1-2 seconds. When we started investigating it looks like the air filter was not reinstalled after the last shadetree mechanic worked on it. Not sure exactly how long it was run this way. Is it possible that it could be a bad MAF sensor? If I unplug the sensor should it crank in limp mode? Would a MAF sensor from a 1993 ES300 be interchangable, if so I have one to swap out with. The check engine light is on, but we are unable to drive to Autozone to get the codes checked. Any help or suggestions is appreciated.
