When the car is in Park or Neutral the car idles erratically going from 1000 rpm to 1600 rpm up and down up and down. When the car is put into gear this stops however idle is maintained at a little over 1000 rpm which I know is too high. Can anyone tell me what is causing this and how I can cure the fluctuation in P and N and return the idle back to normal (650). The car has 180k on the clock. Many thanks. Sounds like your throttle position sensor. If it is adjusted too high, your RPM will jump as you have stated. You can try adjusting it. Look at similar postings on how to adjust.
