98 Es300 - Need Stereo Replacement Advice!

I need to know if I can replace the stock head unit (LCD starting to bleed) and leave the stock speakers!? I need AUX in and MP3 CD capability. I am happy with the stock speakers .. I'm not looking to annoy people with mega-super-bass.

This is on a 1998 ES300 with "Premium Lexus Sound System"

Heres what I want to do

1. Replace factory head unit with 1 DIN head unit w/ rear AUX in (perhaps Alpine) - connect replacement headunit directly to factory speakers

2. Remove glovebox CD-changer

3. Install tiny PC into glovebox - Run audio input to AUX in on replacement headunit

4. Eventually add display and GPS capabilities

I've read through the forum, but can't seem to find anyone who is trying to do this. Will the speakers connect to a typical headunit? Will I run the risk of damaging the factory speakers?
