  1. Happy Holidays one and all!! OK,here is the problem: Of COURSE my wife is driving the first time this occurs! (Isn't that always the way?) Anyway when you turn the steering wheel right mainly but left also, sounds to me like the Rack&Pinion polished rod (for lack of a better term is dragging on the boot (accordion like boot). Now this noise stops when you quit turning the wheel. That's why I was thinking rack&pinion is what it is, because I know what squealing belts sounds like, a P/S pump, a P/S pump low on fluid, bad idler pulley ETC. However this is unique, I have never heard a noise like this before. I am usually pretty good with sounds, last time I had a squealing noise, I could not identify I took the car to SEVERAL mechanics. The consensus was "well it does not sound serious, just keep driving it!" SO I did! what it turned out to be was the crank pulley, it's a 2 part piece with a RUBBER ring with a press fit center. What it was doing was slipping.(= squealing) That is why I kept looking at the belts and anything else I could think of, actually replaced the idler pulley. Well the crank pulley fell apart in the driveway, talk about luck! The Lexus GS 400 I bought a few months ago, (98 GS400 w/230K,) looks & runs great!, and just had a new timing belt installed. The previous owner had a literal BOOK of receipts.(1 of the reasons I bought it,it had all maint. docs.) I have had absolutely no problem at all, till recently, when the outside temp. dropped here is SE GA. now is SOUNDS (at least to me) like like a piece of rubber has contracted tight around the rack and pinion rod. (or any other polished rod) I did some searching here, but could not find anything like that, on this site (joined a while back) ANYBODY have anything like this happen? What did it turn out to be? can I just spray some lithium grease on the rod? What is a more permanent fix? Anyway it sounds to me like "metal against rubber" to me. I used to do ALL my own work, only way to make sure EVERY screw, tie-wrap, every nut and bolt are back like they should be, my Health is too bad for that now. Speaking of that, if you are a believer (or not even) please say a prayer for me, JOHN, when you say your prayers, I need an organ transplant...liver specifically. Thanks again, John
  2. Hi all, I have no manual and have searched the forum for this info and can't find it......Where is the cabin filter/filters on the 2K RX 300? TIA, John
  3. Hi all, I have no manual and have searched the forum for this info and can't find it......Where is the cabin filter/filters on the 97 LS-400? TIA, John
  4. Where is the damper door located? Can I get to it from outside or inside the car? Is there much to dismantle to get to it? Thanks for the help and I will look at the A/C test in the general section also, but I don't have a repair manual for the car, do you know where I can get one that is good for a low price? Thanks again, John
  5. Hi, Have a 97 LS-400, when recirculate is chosen on A/C control panel, I hear no vents closing, and air becomes no cooler, it is ALWAYS pulling air from the outside of the car. I can tell becuase even if recirculate is chosen, I can, for instance, smell fresh cut grass when going by mowers on the side of the road. Also, the air can not reach chosen temp in south GA, this is a REAL problem, I checked the referigrant level and it's OK (actually a little over charged) However, in 89 to 95 degree heat I can NEVER get to 72 to 74 interior temp, My wifes RX-300 does this with ease....... any solutions? Also, my wifes RX-300 will leak water into the passenger compartment in heavy rain, we have had it checked several times, with no luck, but she has discovered that if she puts plastic bags over the fresh air intake for the A/c it is less of a problem (obivously this is when the car is parked) it does not seem to do it if the car is being driven in the rain. I have 2 Nissan Maximas that both have well over 150K miles, and I have spent less on repairs on them combined than on either my 2K RX-300 OR my 97 LS-400......I will NEVER but a Lexus again,,,,,,they have been nothing but trouble from the get go...... Please help me change my mind on this. I do the routine maint. and am a technical person by trade ( Air Force Radar, Sub Launched missle tech, computer tech...so I am NOT dumb....I know how to use a volt/ohm meter, and have turned wreches most of my life) However I am now 50 years old and do not wnat to be my own auto mechanic, but everytime I take it to someone the work is subpar and now I am back in the auto repair business (not of my choosing, but if you want it done right you have to so it yourself!!!) All help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks, John
  6. 2000 RX-300 with approx. 65K on the clock........ I have a CEL that is showing P1155 This, according to a chart I found, is bank 1 sensor 1....... I am ASSUMING (and we all know what happens when you do THAT!) That this is an O2 sensor. Can someone verify that 1)this is actually the problem, 2) which sensor this is actually referring to and it's location, and 3)if there is a Toyota part that will cross-over and cost less? If there is not a Toyota part, should I get a dealer O2 sensor? or will a Bosch part work just as well. I have found prices ranging from 65 bucks (no connector, you splice in your old one) to 200 bucks for a Bosch, to 335 bucks for some other brand (OEM I think) TIA Bitsbucket :(
  7. Hi, My Wifes RX 300 (2K model I believe) has these codes and they read kind of cryptic..... A/F sensor I assume is a 02 sensor???? Anyway I have P1130 P1135 and P1150. Is this a common problem? Is there a usual fix? Car just turned 60K miles.... TIA, Bitsbucket
  8. How do you open the key unit to replace the battery? Sounds dumb, but I do not see anyway to open it? I see one little phillips head screw at the bottom near where the actual metal (cut part of the key that goes in the ignition) comes out of the "fob" part of the key. I assume you remove that, is that the only fastner that must be removed to gain access to the battery compartment? Thans in advance, John
  9. Hi, and thanks for the reply, It turned out it was the battery, My wife told me after the first post I made, that "oh yea and one more thing, the clock keeps resetting itself to 1:00" so I did a search for that and saw several posts for that issue, and it basically said "you need a battery" I went and got one this AM and it took care of the starting problem. I am not sure about the CEL because the computer reset after pulling the battery to change it, I'll just have to wait and see if it comes on again. I would like to look at a FAQ though, I can't seem to find it, as I said I saw the "pinned" post but it just show me 2 posts without any links to what I would consider a FAQ. there is one link that goes to a detailing FAQ, but I was looking for something like the Maxima.org FAQ that talks about pulling codes, what the codes mean, specifications for different model years, known problems and fixes.......a general techinical FAQ I guess is what I am talking about. If you could point me to a link for that I sure would appreciate it. Thanks again, John
  10. I saw the "pinned" FAQ but when you go there, there is one post with no links, what is that about????? I need to know how to pull the codes from my 00 RX300 Do you HAVE to have a scanner or can you count flashes (on the CEL) like on other cars? I have a check engine light on and sluggish starter revolutions. Battery is still "blue" in the status window, but I checked and it was a little low on water, topped it off with distilled water and put it on the charger.......it needs charging according to the charger.... could the weak battery cause a CEL (check engine light) to come on? I am sure it is the problem with the low starter revolutions......also battery is the original (Panasonic) what is the normal life for factory Batt? Thanks Bitsbucket
  11. Could you not get one from a wrecked RX 300? I would like to have the nav system too. I bought mine at an auction and it did't have that option installed, if I can find the system I'm sure it could be put in. A salvage yard might be a good place to start looking in fact I've made several inquires to Salvage Yards that sell mostly Lexus stuff.
  12. I just want a list of what is done at the service intervals so I can do it myself. I talked to a service advisor at a Lexus dealership yesterday and he said that the Tranny was NOT power flushed (just a drain and fill) also the brake fluid was just drained and filled (nothing done to the fluid in the lines, just drain the resevoiur and refill) This service was $511.00 That is allot condisering that NOTHING more is done than drain and fills..... Also I'm looking for a woodgrain sterring wheel and a woodgrain dash, this is in addition to the wood already installed, at the factory. Anybody have experience with the woodgrain addon kits available on eBay? Also the steering wheel seems it would be something better left to the dealer as it has an airbag, I DO NOT wnat this thing to go off in my face! TIA John
