  1. i ordered new struts for my 92 sc400 from the tire rack (1-888-371-8473). the kyb struts were around $70 apiece. i took them the toyota dealership to have them installed.they had to do a wheel alignment after because of the front strut replacement. i have been very pleased with the kybs.
  2. i use valvoline durablend 5w30 motoroil and do my filter & oil changes every 7000 miles. i was wondering if anybody else uses this oil. its a combination of synthetic and conventional oil and the manufacturer won't give me the ratio. they say its a secret. for all i know its just has a drop of synthetic added to the regular oil & the price marked up to $2.88 a quart. i tried full synthetic mobile 1 in a brand new 92 chevy fullsize blazer i had but the oil was so thin it would come through the chevrolet seals & was visible on the oil pan.bad seals i guess.inferior to lexus seals for sure. i have a 92 sc400 w 173,000 miles on it & it does not leak a drop to this day. thats why i also purchased a 2003 lx470. i might have these vehicles forever.
  3. i looked at some microfibre towels at walmart today. i could not stand the way they felt . the towel was catching on my skin & it just gave me the creeps to touch it. i guess i will keep using my clean thick terry cloth towels.
  4. DOESN'T USING NEWSPAPER TO CLEAN YOUR WINDOWS LEAVE INK BEHIND ON THE GLASS?
  5. what about the touch free automatic car washes. the lexus dealer here has one in the dealership. are they ok for light cleaning? i know they dont clean it well but sometimes in the winter its nice to get the free saturday wash.
  6. use one of the old timey shaving brushes (the kind for the shave cream bar in a cup) on your nooks & crannies on your dash, console, door panels etc. it takes just a second & gets rid of all the dust.
  7. toyota charged about 180.00 for the changeover
  8. oil was leaking from the valve covers on my 92 sc400. i was even seeing a few drops on the garage floor.all i did was tighten the bolts that secure the valve covers & it hasn't leaked any in the 3 years since.
  9. i was an estimator at lexus body shop in dallas & the bumper cover was off of a car that had its bumper replaced by insurance. the body men & painters repaired, painted & installed it as a going away present. the fog lights in it dont work because 92s only lit up when blinker was on on that side. the fog lights that are in my bumper were damaged leftovers also. sometimes a tab in the back breaks in an accident & insurance replaces the whole thing. i had to buy the little chrome grille & that was it. i dont have the side skirts or the rear bumper updated but the gs400 wheels & front bumper made a dramatic update to my black car. my wheels are chrome & they came off damaged cars also.if chrome gets scratched in an accident insurance replaces the wheel rather than going through the problems associated with sending off the chrome wheels for repair.
  10. do you have a grey upper back seat(the part your back touches) for an sc for sale?
  11. I HAD MY COMPRESSOR REPLACED ON MY 92 SC400 ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO.THIS YEAR THE AC WAS NOT COOLING SO I FIGURED IT NEEDED SOME FREON. MY AC SYSTEM IS AN R12 SYSTEM. THE TOYOTA DEALER IN TOWN SAID THEY COULD EVACUATE THE SYSTEM & CHARGE IT WITH THE NEW TYPE FREON(R134 I THINK)FOR 170 DOLLARS.LEXUS WOULD NOT DO THIS SO I TOOK IT TO TOYOTA & THEY ALSO PUT A DYE IN THERE THAT GLOWS NEON AT A LEAK AREA UNDER A SPECIAL LIGHT. THEY ALSO PUT A STICKER UNDER THE HOOD THAT NOTIFIED OF THE CHANGE OVER. ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS ADD SOME ADAPTERS TO THE FILL VALVES. AC IS COOLING GREAT & ALL IS WELL SO FAR.
  12. i just had my ac system (r 12 system) evacuated & charged with the new type of freon at the toyota dealership. lexus dealer would not do this when asked. toyota says they do it all the time lately. they put a sticker under the hood that tells of the changeover. ac is cooling great & so far so good. they also put some special dye in there that will glow neon at a leak area under a certain type of light. this was done on a 92 SC400.
  13. no, i have the original tail lamps still. i heard that if you update the tail lamps you have to change some circuit box also. sounded to complicated so i did not bother with it. i will try to get some pics of my sc on this site. by the way what is a dl?
  14. i have a 92 sc400 that now has 97 gs400 chrome 5 spoke wheels on it and the front bumper cover from a 98 sc400. this updated the looks of this sc bigtime. i just wanted to let everyone know that these updates will fit on older scs with no modifications necessary.
  15. i am going to replace the plugs in my 92 sc400. it came with ngk platinum tipped plugs from the factory that are supposed to last 60k or 72 months. what is the advantage of iridium plugs? i noticed that my 03 lx470 is equipped with iridium plugs that are supposed to last 120,000 miles.
  16. the coolant leak areas i have had on my sc 400 over the years have been from the tank seal on the radiator(radiator then replaced),rubber hose on the back of the thermostat neck(hose replaced),the antifreeze reservoir had a crack(reservoir replaced) and then the coolant coming through the weep hole on the water pump when the pump was failing.
  17. the plug wire just broke on it's own free will. i guess this happens sometimes. right? it was coming from the drivers side coil so it took out the whole drivers side. i don't know for sure if the passenger side has its own coil.
  18. THE HEAD UNIT FOR MY STEREO ON MY 92 SC400 HAS HAD THE LETTERS CDcmp ON THE LCD DISPLAY FOR THE LAST 6 MONTHS.FINALLY I LOOKED IT UP IN THE OWNERS MANUAL AND IT SAID TO HOLD THE CDcmp button down for about 6 seconds to get to this mode which is supposed to improve sound quality at lower listening levels. the problem is, as i found out , it sounds muted when you turn it up. i held the button in, heard a beep, and then i had way better sound. make sure you guys dont have this displayed on your lcd or your sound quality will be diminished.
  19. WHAT KIND OF PLUGS DID YOU USE ? NGK OR DENSO? PLATINUM TIPPED OR IRIDIUM?
  20. IV'E HAD MY 92 SC400 SINCE 1995.AROUND 1998 I STARTED IT UP & IT FELT LIKE IT WAS ONLY RUNNING ON 4 CYLINDERS.IT WAS NIGHT AND FOR SOME STUPID REASON I DROVE IT ABOUT 4 MILES TO SEE IF THE PROBLEM WOULD CLEAR. AFTER PUTTING ALONG I SMELT SOMETHING & PULLED OVER TO SEE MY CATS BEHIND THE MOTOR GLOWING CHERRY RED.IT TURNED OUT THE PLUG WIRE HAD BROKEN FROM THE COIL SO THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE MOTOR WAS GETTING NO SPARK & RAW FUEL WAS BEING DUMPED INTO THE EXHAUST WHICH MELTED THE CATS.I GUESS IT WAS IGNITING IN THERE OR SOMETHING. I HAD TO GET THE FRONT CATS REPLACED WHICH WAS VERY EXPENSIVE. SO THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS IF YOU LOSE POWER ALL OF THE SUDDEN PARK IT TILL YOU FIND :cries: OUT WHATS WRONG.
  21. you are correct about the freeway or far from home problem for sure. in my situation i only drive my 92 sc400 about 5000 miles a year and don't get very far from home so i took the gamble & it paid off. i will keep your advice in mind when i consider the timing belt maintenance on our 03 lx 470 that we take on 2000 mile trips. that kind of breakdown would be a nightmare of a problem on a long road trip.
  22. i was able to wait till 170,000 miles before i paid to have the big timing belt maintenance. i was told by a mechanic that what usually happens is the water pump bearing freezes up & then the belts fry. he said to wait until you see a antifreeze leak on your garage floor that comes from the front of the motor. this means the water pump seals are going out & coolant leaks out through the weep hole on the pump. this is when you have the work done. have them replace the timing belts, water pump, and idler pulleys.
