  1. I know this is a long shot, but some idiot just ripped off my mom's gold emblems off her 95 SC400. He (or she) took the "L" on the deck lid, and broke the "Lexus" script. I'm afraid it won't match if I don't replace the "SC400" script emblem too. Are these still available by any chance?
  2. We still have not bought the tires. A local dealer gave us a good price on the Falken, but claim none of their distributors have them right now. One more thing. This is kind of hard to explain, but the car likes to wander with the tires that are on it. It will follow any little crack in the road. She hates it, so I am still researching trying to find the best tire for her. I really don't want to be responsible if they suck :whistles:
  3. Thanks for the info everyone :) I will see which way she wants to go, but the Falkens seem like a good choice. She does have a Costco membership, so she may be interested in doing it that way. Thanks, Keith
  4. Do me a favor and see if they have the country of origin on them. If you don't see it, see if you can make out what the first few letters (and/or numbers) are after "DOT". I would greatly appreciate it. SCdriver, I understand what you are saying. A quality tire is important. I was under the impression that the Falken was a good tire, maybe not in the same league with the F1, but pretty decent. This car is strictly a daily driver. My mom is in her 60's and does no hot-rodding :D It would surprise me if this car has ever been over 85mph. She simply leaves it up to me to help her avoid getting ripped off.
  5. Once again I need help with my mom's 95 SC400. She needs new tires. The Yokohamas she has have been pretty disappointing. I have heard good things about the Falken Ziex Ze-512, at $77 they seem like a bargain. I was also looking at Goodyear F1 GS-D3's, but at nearly $50 more per tire, they would have to be really great...and for my mom, great would mean a nice ride and long wearing :) I also was looking at a BFG g-Force Sport, but I honestly have not heard anything one way or the other about them. If you have any other recommendations for tires for her car, I am all ears. BTW, where are the Falken's built? Japan I am guessing? They are not made in China are they?
  6. Are the seats in the SC the same as the LS? My mother has a 95 SC400 and I never really noticed a problem in all the years she had it. That was until I had to drive it for an extended period of time. Last February I had to drive her to Virginia from here in central Florida. I'd say about the time I got to Daytona Beach on 95 I was started to notice something was not quite right. By the time I reached Jacksonville I was downright uncomfortable. Everything I tried, shifting to the left, the right, hunching over, laying the seat back as far as it would go, nothing helped. By the time I got to NC 7 hours later, my back was hurting bad. I'd have to pull over at rest stop after rest stop and lay down on a bench for a few minutes. It was a huge relief to finally get to our destination. Unfortunately I could barely sleep on a bed, I had to lay on the floor. For three days I could hardly walk. I left her up there and came back, dreading the return trip when I went back to get her in March I made it, but same thing. My back was wrecked for days after I returned. Now, I have made this trip quite a few times and never had a seat bother me. In July I rented a car to go pick up my new truck in NY. About 1800 miles up there and 1500 back in an F350 with a vinyl 40/20/40 bench seat and it never bothered me. Now whenever I drive her car, I can start to feel the discomfort coming on within 10 miles. I told her if I ever have to do that trip again, I am going to tow the car up there Either that or she is going to have to buy me a different seat or milk crate or something to sit on. :D These seats aren't made for everyone, that's for sure.
  7. You better believe the first thing I did after I read this was to double check the routing :D Heck you never know :whistles: That was fine, but I do have an update on the car. If you read the thread mentioned above, this is my mother's SC400. She had called a couple local shops and no one wanted to touch the car and recommended she take it to Lexus. I took it upon myself to fix it (or try to) . I did not really have time to, but I knew she did not have the money to part with. I don't think I have ever taken on a job that I did not honestly think I could do. That's why this one baffled me so much. I basically gave up as I knew she needed the car back asap. At this point she decided the best thing was to get it to the dealer. She did not want me to drive it that far and used AAA to tow it 35 miles to the dealership. I was not at all happy about it, but it was her decision. I was more or less mad at myself for not getting it fixed when I was sure I could. Kind of like being 35-0 and getting knocked out in your 36th fight <_< I did notice the resevoir-to-pump hose was seeping after I had reinstalled it the last time. I left it and wrote a note for the tech summing up what had been done and made a note of the now leaking hose. It arrived to the dealer's service department Friday at noon. They called my mother shortly afterwards telling her that everything looked good and the power steering was working just fine, just needed a little fluid. That's a far cry from no power assist at all They had told her there was a $100 fee for just diagnosing it, but since there was nothing wrong she could just come get the car, no charge. Whatever happened on the ride there is beyond me I still wondered about the leaking hose, but the service writer said they were unable to find any leaks. I took her over Saturday afternoon to pick it up, still nothing was said about any leak. I went straight for the parts counter and bought a replacement hose. Sure nough, I pop the hood when they drive it up and there is a good sized puddle that has leaked from that very spot. My mom wanted to complain. I had to reason with her that there was no charge, don't look a gift horse in the mouth ;) I filled it with fluid and we were on our way. I took it back over to my shop Saturday evening and it appears the leak was more a misaligned factory clamp than the hose. I put a new clamp on and everything is working great right now. I have no idea why it acted like it did and I am not expecting it to never show up again...but it works right now :)
  8. In this thread yesterday I mentioned an awful groaning sound coming from the steering on Sunday. Before I saw the reply I had already ordered the pump <_< So tonight I put the new AC Delco reman on the car, flush the old fluid out and fill with new Dexron. With the front lifted, I turned the wheel several times to try to purge the air. Good news, all is quiet. I set the front of the car down to take it for a test drive. No power assist at all! :( Any idea what to look at next? I can't believe I tried to save my mom some money and now it's kicking my butt I don't know to much about these cars, as it is not mine, so any help will be greatly appreciated.
  9. Thanks. Not sure if I quite follow though Are you saying that they will not leak fluid if the high pressure lines are bad? They suck air instead? Keith
  10. Hey everybody. I went out to dinner with my mom yesterday and we took her '95 SC400. Nothing unusual until we were on the way back. I went to make a turn and this terrible groaning sound came out from the Lexus My first thought was the pump. There is no fluid leakage that I can see at all. The resevoir is not down any. Just all of a sudden, something went south. I've never seen a pump go like this before, but it clearly has a rough sound coming from the pump even at idle and not turning the wheel. Could there be something else that would take a pump out like that. I've got the pump out of the car and I'm getting ready to go get a replacement, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't something else I need to look out for before I put the new one on. Thanks, Keith
  11. Hi, I just found this site last night. I'm not a Lexus owner, but my mom has a 1995 SC400. I am not exactly sure who did the brakes last time, but I know her husband (who she is now seperated from) had some kevlar or some kind of high performance pads put on. It shakes terribly when braking at times and I am quite sure it needs new rotors and pads all the way around. I found Brembo rotors on TireRack and they had some low cost OEM-type pads listed as well. It has been my experience to stick with stock pads. I work on all my stuff, which is pretty much all Fords. My mom mentioned taking it to a dealer and I have pretty much offered to do the job for her to save her money. I mainly need to know where to get the pads. We don't have a Lexus dealer within 35 miles or so of here and I would think you guys might know of a cheaper source? ;) Also, are the Brembo rotors that TireRack sells a good choice? I think they are about $70 each. Any specific brake fluid you recommend? Thanks in advance Keith
