  1. Sorry, I was confusing. I pulled the fuse to disable the tilt/telescope system completely. The wheel now stays where I left it. I can't move it at all until I insert the fuse. It's probably in a different location in the UK but with mine it's in the o/s front junction box and I think it was top right and one down but there's a list on the lid. Mike
  2. You're right! Jim I mean - hehe. It's me who's pulled the fuse - having first got the wheel where I want it - I'll just have to remember where I put it in 2010 when I get the timing belt done. Mike
  3. Thanks Guys, I'm planning to do most of the maintainance myself; I'll have to remember to ask for it to be done when I getthe cam-belt/water pump done.
  4. Thanks Jim, That's great; mine's a 2002 model! Is it possible to get something reasonably cheaply (as a member of the public) that can connect to the car and interface with it in a similar way the dealers. Mike
  5. It just makes a tiny squeak but doesn't move the wheel at all. I don't want to disconnect the tilt motor as I still want to use it (if I wanted to totally disable the system I'd just pull the fuse). Rather, I want to disable the AUTO-tilt function to preserve the tilt motor. (ie so that it doesn't have to work each time I switch the car on or off). Any ideas? Mike
  6. Hi, Is it possible to disable the auto-tilt/telescope feature whilst leaving the manual adjustment available? I ask because I suspect the auto-tilt facility has, after 144,000 miles, broken the telescope motor and I'd like to preserve the remaining tilt motor. Thanks. Mike
  7. Hi, I have two questions related to this: 1. Is there a similar link (ie. details of fuses) for the 2002 LS430? I just bought mine and I can't see fuse details (apart from the location of the boxes) in the owners or workshop manuals. 2. My driver's window is pretty noisy (might be slow but how would I know being new - lol). Is there an easy way of lubricating it as I will need to use it a lot in my job. I looked at the workshopo manual for dismantling the door and it went on forever and involved rivets (!!?!) Thanks! Mike
  8. I just bought a 2002 LS430 and got it converted to run on LPG (also called auto-gas - I believe that it's actually propane), do you have that over there? It's about 80% as efficient as good old petroleum spirit BUT the good bit is that it only costs about half that of petrol (or gas as you call it). The net result is that it gives me the equivalent of 42mpg average. I had this on my last car also ( a Ford Scorpio 2.3 litre 4 cyl.) and the savings I got not only paid for the conversion costs but also paid for the Scorpio and most of the Lexus; mind you I do a lot of miles but it is nice to fill the tank for half the cost. BTW, to fill the LS430's petrol tank over here costs the equivalent of $200 so you can understand why I'm so pleased about the saving. Hopefully this info. will help you guys to worry a little less about your mpg Mike
  9. Glad to read this thread. I just bought a 2002 LS430 with 140k miles on the clock and it too has these patches where the window meets the lower rubber. Good to know what the cause is; both for peace of mind and to know what to avoid doing in the future when cleaning. I had thought of changing the windows but I just read the manual and I just changed my mind. I changed all the side windows in my last car because of car wash scratching but that was relatively easy; this looks like it would be a big job. BTW, how easy is it to lubricate the window winding mechanism? My driver's window is a bit noisy and I'd like to quieten it some. Thanks Mike
  10. Great link Cuda! I have a 2002 LS430. Is there a similar "tutorial" site for the 430? My reason for looking is that I want to know how to romove/install/work on the instrument cluster and although I have the workshop manual CD I can't find the instrument cluster on it anywhere. Thanks Mike
  11. I just bought a 2002 LS430 with 143,000 miles on the clock and I too have this "two cups a week" coolant loss. The dealer maintainance records show that the timing belt was replaced at 125,000 miles BUT no record of the water pump being replaced. There is some noise coming from the v-belt area which I suspected might be from one of those many rotating items. I guess it would make sense to get the water pump changed at the next belt change. Are there any tests for a failing water pump OR any tricks for lubricating it to quieten it - my Ford Scorpio had a little hole in it's pump that you could drip oil into. Great to find this site, you guys are so helpful and friendly - although I'm an Englishman my daughter lives in CA and my son is in US Army serving in Iraq. Thanks Mike
  12. Hi, This may be a silly Britisher type question BUT, do you guys have lpg/autogas/propane over there? It's just than I'm getting my new LS430 converted to run on the stuff and I've got questions about sparkplugs. Mike
  13. I guess I want to look after the engine as much as possible. I do 60-70k miles a year and I'd like to keep this car til around 600k. I'm used to 3k intervals with my Ford Scorpio and it's really kept the engine sweet. Do you think it benefits the engine in the long run to change the oil more often or am I just a little paranoid? Thanks Mike
  14. Aaah, I guess you have to blame it on the Atlantic; well let me say "non-synthetic" oil then, would 15/40 non-synthetic oil be ok so long as I change it every 3,000 miles? Thanks for the language tip! Mike
  15. Hi, I know this must be a frequent question but only having three letters, you can't use it in the "search" facility. I have just bought a 2002 Lexus LS 430 with 143,000 miles on the clock. I plan to put a lot of miles on it and my plan is to use 15/40 (the weather here suits that) mineral oil and change it every 3,000 miles. Does that sound sensible? Thanks Mike PS Any known list of links to oil threads would be greatly appreciated.
  16. Hi from England, I'm going to look at a 2002 LS 430 this weekend that's done 140,000 miles and I'd be grateful if you all could help me with a few questions: 1. Are there any specific problems I should be looking out for. 2. I'd like to maintain the car myself. Are there any worshop manuals or other guides available to help me with this? 3. Where is the best place to get Lexus parts online in the US (I understand they're very expensive over here) 4. I hear that it has a timing/cam belt, how often does this need to be changed and can I do it myself? That will do for now. Thanks Mike
