  1. The telescoping steering column feature on my 99 LS 400 has gone kaput. It will move in and/or out very slowly only if I push or pull on the steering wheel while operating the control switch on the steering column. After making a diy diagnosis, I found the problem is excessive friction within the telescoping mechanism itself. I disconnected the worm gear drive from the sliding tubes and found I could move the steering wheel in and out manually, but I really had to put some uumph into it. I mean uumph. Once I overcame the initial resistance, the column would release and bang into the stop at the other end of the stroke. I’ve tried several different lubes and attempted to work them in by physically moving the column in and out, but no luck. The level of friction has not changed. I’m wondering if there is some kind of a tension adjustment in the mechanism to take up the slack between the tubes. Any ideas or suggestions?
  2. Sorry to see there are no replies to your query! I'm having the identical problem with my 1999 LS400. Had the same idea about pulling the steering wheel out manually and then pulling the fuse. Could not budge the steering wheel. Checked the under hood fuse box and could not find a specific fuse for the Steering Column. Haven't checked the fuse box in the drivers compartment. I'll keep checking this site.
  3. Based on my automotive experience, when a PCV valve clogs and becomes inoperative (from a build-up of carbon and/or engine oil precipitates), it will result in an increase in crankcase pressure. As the pressure in the crankcase increases, it can force engine oil to leak throught the valve cover gaskets, main seals, etc. The added crankcase pressure may cause a change in engine performance, but I don't believe it will be noticable. The best way to check the PVC is to take it out and give it a visulal inspection and a shake. If it appears to be clear and you hear the ball check valve rattling around, it's probably OK.
  4. Impressive!! Did you do the timing belt replacement yourself? How difficult was it -- I've purchased the repair manuals and hope to do it myself. Assuming you've had the car since 1990, did you ever have to re-shim the valves (lifters)? Thanks, fkleba
