  1. The valve is attached to the power steering pump, before replacing the valve check to see if you are getting power to the connector.
  2. I would start by looking at the emergency brakes, especially in states where they salt the roads in winter, you could have rust on the emerg. brake cables. Try driving without using the E brakes for awhile, if it goes away you could pull the drums and check E brake operation. How does the underside of the car look otherwise? Is there much rust?
  3. I would definatly recomend checking the PCV valve, and make sure that the rubber grommet that holds the PCV valve into the valve cover is in good shape. The gromet on my car had dried out and cracked, which allowed the oil to be drawn into the intake maniflod. The shop that replaced our valve cover gaskets should have caught this one, but then again if the valve cover gaskets were leaking that bad you would have noticed a real mess under the car and you would have smelled the oil burning on the headers.
  4. On a 93, there is no programing for the key. All you have to do is change the battery. Before you change the battery though there is one thing that you might not be aware of. There is a small switch just to the right hand of the power mirror adj switch, to the left of the steering wheel. This switch disables the key remote. I know this for a fact because this is the same issue that I had. I replaced the battery and it still did not work. I then found the switch and it started working. Fyi in case you are not aware of the remote trunk release on the drivers door. There is a switch in the glove box that disables the trunk release (upper left hand corner).
  5. I have purchased both engines and trans from Japan. Great way to get a low milage engine cheap.
  6. If you don't want to take the chance of finding any other engine problems, you have one other option. You could allways purchase a low mileage engine from Japan (listed all the time on ebay). These engines typically have less than 60K, and come with all accessories. They ran about $700 to $800 including delivery. A new car might be nice, but I like the idea of not having a note that comes with it.
  7. You should pull a vacuum on the system, check for leaks (check the rate of rise), and then add freon. Make sure that you replace the oil that was lost when you discharged the system. The easy way to do this is to buy freon that already has oil added. It is normally a good practice to replace the receiver whenever the system is discharged, but I will admit that when I replaced the evaporator on my truck, I didn't change it out, and it is doing a good job keeping my truck cool down here in Texas.
  8. I looked it up in alldata, according to them, you do have a filter. I havn't fiqured out how to cut and paste the pictures for alldata, but the location appears to be the same as the later models. There is a sticky at the top of the forum that describes how to replace the filter.
  9. Yes, you can purchase a universal cat and have it installed for less than $300. $1200 is way too much to pay for it.
  10. I looked it up on alldata, and according to them the Key FCC# must match the ROM in the keyless entry modual. I read this as meaning that there is a part number on the ROM (probably a sticker), and possibly the FCC# also. I would suggest poping the cover off and looking for the ROM. If you get lucky, you might get the FCC and be good to go. I find it a little dissapointing that Lexus couldn't tell you the FCC just by the vin, but then they couldn't rob you for $600 to just tell you a number! Don't bother trying the key programing procedure, Alldata says that is good for 95 and later.
  11. Thanks, I couldn't see the second bolt. I did use the jumper wire. It took a few minutes to locate the diagnostic port. I'll try again in the morning when it's cool again. (I know the engine must be warmed up :-) That was it. It passed smog today. Only one small mishap. I burned my arm when tightening the distributor. I pulled back and knocked the coil wire out of the coil which zapped me. I pushed the wire back into the boot and it started back up. Now I need to see if I can buy the coil wire by itself... Any sources out there? Thanks Carl You might try your local auto parts store, I'm not sure if they sell them separate, but never hurts to call.
  12. If it starts out cold, but then tapers off, it could be the expansion valve. You would need a ac gauge set to check pressures and tell you what is going on. Since it is starting out cold, there is freon in the system, so there is no point in pulling a vacuum, if it has a low charge, just add some more freon. You do not have to convert, R12 is still available and can be purchased if you are certified to handle freon, (or just search your local classified, you can probably find a can of r12). I would only recomend converting if you have to discharge the system for major repairs. If you have not worked on ac before, I would recomend purchasing a good manual, and reading up before starting, and remember to wear safety glasses while working on the ac. I would not recomend a person without experience to start on this type of repair.
  13. The low pressure port is near #1 cylinder (pass side firewall). I assume that there is no charge at all, since you did not indicate that you wanted to top it off. I would not recomend trying to take on a job like this if you don't have experence with this. If the system has not been workig for awhile, it will need to be leak checked, and the reciever will also need to be replaced. This will also be a good time to consider having it converted to R134. My 92 was converted, and does a good job keeping the car cool down here it Texas.
  14. Distributor is adjustable, but there are two hold down bolts locking the distributor down. Also make sure you put the jumper wire in the diag connector before you adj your timming.
  15. According to alldata, the cam sensor is mounted on the rear of the front cylinder bank. The crank sensor is mounted on the front of the engine, behind the front pulley.
  16. When you are having the problem, does the engine crank/turn over? If not, the next time it acts up, give the starter a couple good pokes with the largest screwdriver you have. If it then turns over, replace the starter.
  17. A oily residue would indicate a freon leak in your evaporator. How well is your ac cooling down?
  18. Are you getting any cold air? Obviously you have cheched the charge pressure when you replaced the switch. When you jumpered the switch, and ran the compressor did you notice if any lines were frosting over? Especially after the reciever/ filter? The expansion valve is probably a good bet, but I would check the reciever before I condem the expansion valve.
  19. I used "mothers mag wheel polish" on mine. Took only 5 mins on each lens and they cleaned up just fine. It's been a couple months now and they still are clear. Of course it isn't show quality, but it's fine for a driver car.
  20. My car had been converted before I purchased it. I hooked up my gauge set awhile back and played around with it because I felt it wasn't getting cold enough. At the pressures I'm running, the ac does a pritty good job cooling down the car (no easy task because it's dark green, and it gets real hot down here). It seams to run about as well as my wifes explorer, which was 134 from the factory.
  21. I have a 92 that was converted, and I am seeing 50 ~ 55 deg at the vent ( outside it's low to mid 90's). I am getting cold air in under 2 min. You say the low side is 36? Is that at idle? I charged mine to about 42 low, 230 hi at app 1500 rpm, with app 92 deg ambient. I tried less, but I'am getting colder air at the higher pressure.
  22. /I also have a 92 es300. Mine idles at about the same spots. Check to see if the AC compressor is cycling on / off when the idle starts jumping? How cold is the AC? If the Ac isn't all that great, and the compressor is cycling, that would point to a low freon charge. The fact that it only happens with the ac on is a good indication that the IAC and EGR valve is not a issue.
  23. Give a good visual check on all vac hoses, especially the underside, look for split, cracking hoses. Don't forget the PVC valve. Once you verified they are fine, then I would start looking at the IACv.
  24. I woud suggest taking it to a good muffler shop, they can set you up for a universal replacement cat for a lot less than what you would pay at the dealer. Universal cat go for as little as $50 on ebay. The labor for installing it should be quite reasonable.
  25. It would probably be a good idea to do a compression check, broken valve springs can also cause a missfire
