  1. I agree. I tried a free air replacement in the stock location and it didnt justify the cost and time. The trunk (on an SC4) is pretty useless anyway so I just put a 10" in a box and called it good. As a side note: I originally thought it would be kinda' tacky to have a box in the trunk but after hearing how well it sounded I got over it. I know a guy that has done some pretty trick sound system installs and he was the guy that basically said "screw it...put a box in the trunk, 'yer not losin' much".
  2. Dude, either your BS'n everyone here or your parents are complete idiot's. Which is it? I'm not trying to be disrepectful. Just pull the trigger and buy the car or don't buy it. The remark you made about the history of the car being bad is a load. If the money to buy the car is coming from your parents then you are at their mercy. If they are so naive to think that an SC400 is a piece of bad merchandise they are out of their minds. Not only that, but if i were you, I would be very skeptical of any advise they give you in the future. I freakin' hate it when people (parent's or otherwise) spew crap out their mouths just because they think they need to give advise. As they say "The road to hell is paved with good intentions". Sorry about the rant. Look, if your parents are so concerned about buying a Lexus, just tell 'em to forget about it and and go out and buy you some piece of crap like a Cadillac or Daimler Chrysler.
  3. Even if the car needs to have a major service done on it, it is still a good buy. If your parents (or anyone for that matter) thinks that the miles are to high, it is because they are use to lifespan of a domestically engineered vehicle and not the lifespan of a Toyota/Lexus.
  4. Inside the drivers door jam, there is a label. Under the barcode you will find the the following: cr/tr : xxx/zzz the xxx represents the color code of your car. You can go to your dealer and they will tell you what the name is. If your car has had a color change, this code will do you no good, but any competent bodyshop can tell you if the car has been completely repainted with a different color/shade. Regarding the chromed wheels: They were optional equipment. Hope this helps
  5. SoarerTT, I own a bodyshop. From my experience, you dont want fiberglass. It is brittle and will crack and shatter under the smallest impact. Any repairs will be a temporary fix. My shop repairs and installs these kit's all the time and they are the biggest rip off. The warrany lasts till they put the car in gear. I have seen guys break them up leaving the parking lot of my shop. I would be selling 'em like hotcakes if I had the capital to aquire the molds ;). IMHO, you will be completely wasting your money on fiberglass. If you cant find a composite kit, dont bother.
  6. SC400 for a reliable daily driver. It has the seat-of-the-pants torque without modifying along with a plush ride. You might end up making your 100 mile journey a few miles longer by finding the long way to work. If you havent driven an SC4 or 3 (or any Lexus for that matter), it will be the difference between night and day from your Fiero. If you like the raw, race-car feel of the Fiero, then you probably wont like the ride of the SC's...they wll put you to sleep. I have driven both the SC3 and SC4 and the torque of the SC4 is what I prefer. Zero to 60 and quarter mile times are one thing but I dont like beating the crap out of my car so the torque fit's my driving style.
  7. To fix your seats you can go to your local dealer and ask them if they have a leather repair vendor. These are guys that go to dealerships and repair the cigerette burns, rips and cracked leather and other stuff that happens to interiors. It's very cost effective and they can make your leather look brand new. I just had it done a month ago and it should cost about $250. I had both front seats and the steering wheel done. It looks like I just spent a mint on new leather. The most important thing to check into is that they are not simply using a laquer (or similar) paint on your seat as this will just make things worse. The guy I used is a friend I've known for about 10 years and he has told me about the "laquer" guys. As a side note, the new sc's are state-of-the-art auto's but in my opinion the older body style is just plain (I hate to use the word) "sexy". At the gas station the other day I had this young hottie (20?) yell out her window "nice car daddy". Kinda weird but whatever floats her boat. ;) Today, at the stereo shop, I had this kid (probably around 17-19 yo) drooling over my car as he had his acura being worked on. My car is completely stock (yet detailed to the hilt). He probably had visions of putting a picnic-table sized wing on the trunk lid. :o Hey, if the kid's are trippin' on the car they must have done something right in the style department at Lexus.
  8. Thanks for the replies guys. As far as the mileage goes...I would definetely document the change (mostly for my own benefit). The car has 183,000 miles on it with full doc's and with a couple exceptions, exclusively serviced at the dealer. I checked out the ebay auction and it sounds like it is probably the way to go. I just dont know how I can handle the 9 day "down time". In all my years of owning cars I have never owned any vehicle that is closer to perfection as this car. I own a body shop and have many car dealerships as my customers. As a result I'm able to drive almost every make and model of cars to and from my shop. About 2 years ago I had the privilage of driving my first SC400 to the shop and was so impressed that I asked the dealer if I could take it for a day to get a better feel for it. I would have bought that particular car but it was kinda rough. Two more came across my path that I turned down because of mileage or color and I was kicking myself ever since. When I stumbled apon this one I didnt make the same mistake and havent looked back.
  9. Will an instument cluster out of any year sc400 work in a 93 model sc400? Are the connectors the same or modifiable. One of my needles are burnt and after reading about the fixes available I thought I might simply replace the whole cluster with a used one...maybe even go with a cluster out of a newer one since they seem to be nicer on the eyes. Thanks, Dro
