  1. Hello All,

I have a 99 GS300 with the stock pioneer radio that is working exceptionally well but now I've noticed that half of the radio display along with the button number 3 & 4 are burnt out. If I go to LEXUS they will want to replace it as LEXUS never does any repairs just swaps out old with new (or re-manned). Wanted to know if there's an easy fix that I can accomplish myself and/or perhaps change the ugly green LED's for some new up to date colors to better match the speedometer. I've seen someone in the NY area with the updated colors (very cool) but never got the chance to ask him who or how it was done.

    Thank you,

    Al

I can get you a factory replacement LCD for your Pioneer headunit if you want to go that route.

    dcfish,

Same problem here. Can you send me the information for the replacements LCD? Thanks.

What year and model ? PM or EM mecheers.gif

WOW!....lots of people seem to have this LCD problem. The display on my 2001 GS300 Pioneer unit just has dimmed on one side so I assume that one of my backlights are out. I haven’t seen anything in this form about just replacing the backlights. Is this possible?.....has anyone done it?

DCfish, can you please e-mail me the LCD replacement info in case I have to go that route. I’d also be interested in adding the MP3 Player connection if possible.

    Thanks

  2. Well first the good news….yesterday I played at the same golf course I played at about a month ago when I lost my spare. I checked in the pro shop and VOILA! someone had found my key and turned it in, so now I have a spare.

Txateer, I was about to order from sparekeys.com but the price on the web site said $109.95! How did you get one for $19.95?

For the record I checked www.sewellpartsonline.com and they wanted $185 plus $65 to ship to Canada! (I think it weighs about 5 ounces)

  3. I recently lost the spare key for my 2001 GS300 and the "stealership" wants $360 PLUS programming fee for a replacement. I have searched this forum for the best place to buy a new one but all the info appears dated. Has anyone ordered a replacement recently? I still have a master so I would like one that is cut and I could program myself.

Any leads on a good place online to buy would be greatly appreciated!

  4. That repair cannot be done “properly” for $250. Spend the money and get it done right and you’ll be happier in the long run.

I had rear door dent/scratch and rear quarter panel “ding” repaired on my 2001 GS300 a year or so ago. Most independent body shops quoted me from 1000-1200 bucks. I got the name of a guy with a professional home shop who said he does work for about 60% of what most body shops charge. I was confident in this guy as he does body work at a local GM dealer during the day. He did a great job and the final cost was $700. I was worried about color matching too but he uses a computerized mixing system that matches your color from the manufacturer's paint code stamped on your car. He says that any “reputable” shop will be using this system. He also blended into the front door, rear quarter panel and partially into the roof and then clear-coated the entire area.

This guy is located in Whitby, ON and I can give you his name if you want but the savings may not be worth the inconvenience of coming out from Mississauga and leaving your car for a few days. If you can’t find an independent guy I would use a reputable shop and make sure they are doing a proper repair. I would think you would pay upwards of $1000 for a good job but in the end the extra bucks are worth it.

  5. An independent Lexus shop advised me that they wait until 120K to replace the timing belt on a '98-'05 GS300, say they've never had a problem in 10 years doing it at the later interval.

Any opinions / experience re: doing this?

It would be great to get a little extra mileage before having to change it.. but not if there's a risk of losing the belt!

I just had mine changed on my 2001 GS300 at 190K Kms which is about 120K miles and the belt looked fine. I wouldn't worry too much about a few thousand extra miles but as others have said there are no guarantees and the cosequences are HUGE.

  6. cliffy's price sounds a lot better. or if you are mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself as well if you have the proper tools. its not really that hard for it. if you go on the IS forum of this site, it has the guide on how to do it.

I got a quote from an independent Lexus mechanic for around $1000 to replace timing belt, water pump, cam seals, crank seal and idler bearing. Lexus quoted $990 "without" the waterpump. The local Toyota dealership said they would replace the timing belt for $375 and inspect the other parts and only replace if required.

Does anybody have an opinion on NOT changing the waterpump and seals if they seem to be fine. Is the waterpump prone to failure? Does anybody have a high mileage GS300 with the original waterpump? My GS300 is a 2001 and has 190K kms (118k miles).

  7. Mine's the same way for both of them (I have to remotes for the car). DC's right about the chin trick! I know the previous owner of my car took it back to the dealership a few times complaining about the range of the keyfob remote. They replaced it twice. Oddly enough, the dedicated keyfob remote for our 4runner (stand alone fob not part of the key itself) has an insane range of about a football field! One thing that did help mine was to take it apart and clean everything up. All the gunk that gets stuck along the side of the buttons for some reason seemed to hinder it's performance.

So I guess mine is kind of normal and I have tried the "chin trick" and it does seem to work. My wife has a Sienna and like the 4runner the remote for that has a long range also.

    Thanks for the responses.

  8. Just be sure bolt pattern, offset and tire sizes are correct. Regardless of how good/bad it looks get ready for lots of people asking you why you did this, Infiniti & Lexus people alike. Especially if you keep the Infiniti center caps.

Ill be changing the center caps for sure. I paid $450 for all 4....so it was a cheap pick up. I dont mind the stock GS wheels but mine are chrome which im not a huge fan of. Ill see how they look on the car & if they dont blend well im sure i could sell em.

    Regards.

Those are nice wheels and a great price too. I believe the bolt pattern will be the same but the centre bore for Infiniti is typically larger (66.1 vs 60.1mm) so you may need an adaptor ring.

Would I need to purchase this adaptor ring or would any shop I have mount & balance my tires & wheels have them at hand?

    Thanks!

I wouldn't say "any" shop would have them. I'd call ahead to make sure.

  10. My 1998 GS 400 (85,000 miles) runs great with regular 5W-30 oil and regular changes at 3,000 miles. With so many good reports on Synthetic oil , I may change to a Synthetic oil like Mobil 1 on the next oil change and keep the vehicle using a synthetic oil for the future. Has any one done this and are there any advantages besides longer change intervals. I know the cost per quart will be considerably higher.

I have a 2001 GS300 with 180,000 kms and I just switched to synthetic. I went with Castrol Syntec 0W30, which is the "German Syntec" so it is fully synthetic. Canadian Tire had on sale here for $6.56 a litre so it wasn't much more than conventional, especially if you change it yourself. The local Toyota dealership charges $90+ tax for a synthetic oil change and they use Mobil 1. I also went with the NAPA Gold filter which is made by WIX and is apparently a quality filter. Six litres of oil (it takes 5.4), $10 for the filter and $2 to dispose of the old oil and I'm done for under 60 bucks.

My GS has no leaks and doesn't burn any oil so I had no qualms about going with the 0W30. Haven't noticed any difference in performance as some people claim (not sure how they could notice any small difference it could make) and the car runs at about the same temperature as before. My main reason for the switch is I feel the synthetic will be a little better for our cold Canadian winters and should allow for better lubrication for those cold starts. I'll probably not go much longer between changes but may go to the 8000 kms "normal service" change as opposed to the 5000 km "rough service" interval that I have always went with in the past.

  11. Hi - I just picked up a grandpa original owned '93 GS300 with 96k in almost perfect condition on friday. I have a friend that has the 16" and 17" 5 spoke wheels from a 2nd gen GS and I'm looking for a pic to see how they would look on a 1st gen, I am having no luck searching here and elsewhere. Any pics would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

excuse my language sir but why the hell would you get a 2nd gen gs300 wheels??? instead get some 20 inch stagg fitment wheels from Ebay $300-$800, and then you be turning some heads.....

Not all of us want to "turn heads". I have a 2nd gen and I love the stock rims....classy look and not over-stated or tacky (like you're trying too hard).

  12. I have a 2003 GS 300 RWD with V rated tires. The dealer is suggesting I can switch to a H rated tire (more options) and said it is OK. Anyone else have experience with this?

I am looking at Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S in 225/55/16.

You're probably ok with H rated but I would stick with V rated as that is what the car is designed for.

I have Toyo Versado LX's on my 01 GS300 and they are great....quietest tire I've ever had and handle as good as the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S's there were on the car before them.....and cheaper too!

I can't comment on snow performance though as I use Bridgestone Blizzaks in the winter....also highly recommended.

  13. I'm thinking of replacing the stock 16" rims on my 2001 GS300 with some 17's from a G35. Just wondering if it matters that the centre bore on the 17's is 66.1mm and the stock 16's is 60.1mm. Will I need to use a hub ring? Has anyone done this and if so did you have any vibration problems. I believe our rims are "hubcentric" correct?

yes they are hubcentric and yes u need hub rings. get the aluminum ones....

here is a link all bout the g35's....n y wouldnt u upgrade to the 18" or 19" g35's? seems kinda silly to just upgrade from a 16 to a 17....wasnt aware the g35 had a 17 either....thought it was ONLY 18" or 19". im supposed to be aquiring some 19"'s from a good friend of mine for really cheap

check the last page of this one....

Thanks for the links, lots of good info there.

The rims are from a 2003 G35 Coupe and the stock size that year was 225/50/17. I am actually considering the "upgrade" only because I could get a great deal on the 17's with almost new tires included. I'm reluctant to go to 18 or 19" because even though I'd like to improve my handling I'm more worried about keeping my smooth ride. Although I occasionly drive a little aggressive 90% of my driving is just highway cruising so it's more important to me to have a smooth quiet ride.

  16. Does anybody have a "how-to" for front seat removal on an '01 GS300. I did a search and it only turned up info on the back seat removal. Thanks.

should ONLY be 4 screws in each just like ne other front seat BUT BE CAREFUL of the srs wires and the heating wires DONT just jerk the seat out after you unscrew them and i would recommend undoing the battery before you do this...

y do u need to remove your seats btw?

Wellll it actually has to do with those SRS wires. I have a ground problem bringing in my SRS light and want to clean up the wiring under there and see if I can clear the ground before I have to bring it in. The connectors and wiring are very hard to get at since there's not much clearance under the seat. Also wouldn't mind just doing some general cleaning because I haven't really detailed the car yet since I bought it last spring.

  17. I have a 2001 GS300 and about three weeks ago my Airbag Warning Light started blinking for no reason and after no maintenance was performed. I read some of the forums and tried the "jiggle the wires" solution with no luck. Yesterday while doing an oil change at Toyota I had the codes read and was surprised to see "several" codes were in. They were: B0112, B0117, B1162 and B1167. All these codes were essentially for circuit grounds. Is it possible that I have this many grounds at once or could it be some kind of ECM fault.

I might add that I live in Ontario, Canada and these codes did come in while we were having a real cold snap. We've since had some mild above freezing weather but that didn't seem to help, but I could still have some moisture problems. Any insight you could give or experiences to share on similar problems like this would be greatly appreciated.
